 Here's member 1080 prepping the tree , before we cut its down. We used tiedowns to lash the ladder firmly against the tree.
 The tree had three similar size sections, the wind took the other two down this year, hitting the house..

 I often use tiedowns for lots of other things how about you guys?

You are talking about ratchet straps, right? I use them for all kinds of things. Emergency dog leash, belt for saggy jeans, implement of discipline for unruly grandchildren, short travel winch, tow strap, and every once in a while; a tie down

I used two when I replaced the top fork bridge on my 350/4.  I placed the bike underneath my open garage door, then put ratchet straps onto the handlebars & up to the brackets on the back of the garage door.  I took up the slack, then when I unbolted the handlebars they didn't flop everywhere...

That's a big tree Frank, good job! I've got one about the same size at the back of my house that I'd love to lop, but my wife loves it, so I have to wait for it to fall on my house before I'll be allowed to touch it. I might buy a cheap 52cc pole saw and give it a trim at least, it's probably twice as tall as it was when we bought the house.

I use ratchet straps for lifting engines with my hydraulic engine crane, or lifting the front or rear of bikes up (with the crane again) when doing wheel/fork removals, and once I had to replace the entire roof on a Nissan Bluebird station wagon. The wrecking yard guys had picked the donor car up with a forklift which slightly warped the roof, so once I cut all the pillars the "B" and "C" pillars had big gaps between them, so I had to use a big ratchet strap to pull the roof down before I could weld the pillars. They are permanent fixture in our king size bed 

I use them to hold a ladder treestand to a tree for instance.

Mechanic friend used one to hold one side of my truck intake manifold up while he replaced the intake gasket on one side, changed the direction and did the other side.  Both gaskets replaced in under 20 minutes ('03 Chevy 5.3L)

 We wanted to use ratchets on the ladder but they were not on hand so we used the regular type..

What I have are ratchet straps without the hooks.  They came from the Honda shop I used to work at. The straps came off pallets of new bikes. They are just a ratchet and a strap(think belt), and are real handy.  I do a camping event where we put up a large tarp for a common area. I am bad at knots,so the rope used for the center has loops tied in each end, and the ratchet strap goes around the tree. It gets real tight that way.

You are correct, but.  You can use a ratchet strap for anything a tie down strap will do, but you can't use a tie down strap for everything a ratchet strap will do.

One of my favorite "other" use for a tie down strap,(actually 2), is when I need to remove the front wheel or even the forks.
I have 2 eye bolts in the ceiling of my garage above my lift table.
I put the bike on the table and lift it up to a comfortable working height and hook a tie down strap to each bolt and each end of the handle bars and snug them up.
Then I lower the table a little bit until the front tire is free from the table surface.
When finished with the work I just raise the table back up and unhook the straps.

So I guess they would actually be "tie up" starps then.

Damn "Work Health and Safety" Nazi's are ruining the world, I reckon! If those pencil-dicks were around back in the day, there'd be no Empire State Building, Golden Gate bridge, Hoover Dam, the list of iconic American construction wonders goes on and on.

Sure, hundreds of workers died horrifically during the construction of those capital projects, but hell, they would have all died eventually anyway! If the WHS Nazi's ruled the world back then, we'd all be living in plastic igloos! WHS Nazi's piss me off.......... Oops, wrong thread...........

That's cuz they didn't use tiedowns their ladders.!!!

This tree had three trunks coming out of one.
The center had started to rot out.
First & the largest came down after a very windy storm in April.
Being very lucky to have no damage to the house, garage or sheds.

The second part came down last Friday.
Lucky again to have it resting on the house with no damage to roof or loosing any windows.
With the third trunk I was not going to let nature take it down.

  I tie my pop up canopy to my ice chest for ballast at the track.
  I've used them to pull a race car chassis into position on the jig when things are a bit tweaked or not strong enough yet to hold themselves together.
  We actually winched a 67 impala onto a trailer once using my big tie down straps.  I saw a guy tie a car trailer side door closed when the wind damaged it.

I was watching some "Roadkill" episodes yesterday and say that the boys were using ratchet straps to hold spare wheels etc on the roof of a car they were taking out to the desert, and on "Dirt Every Day" I saw them using a ratchet strap to winch a truck out of the mud. Very cool.

67 Impala....I have used a JackAll and chain to do that..
