battery not charging
« on: July 18, 2015, 05:08:45 PM »
I have a 1982 cb900c I am having a problem. The bike is not charging. When I bought the bike it wasn't charging so I bought a used stator and a brand new regulator-rectifier from caltric off eBay.The bike ran fine until I helped out a friend. There bike stopped charging there battery so I let her use my battery so she could make it home. Even with her dead battery my bike ran fine. A couple days later the bike goes dead. So I buy a brand new battery, stator, rotor and regulator/rectifier. Installed everything and it still will not charge. Can someone direct me in the right direction. The bike is all original as far as I can tell. Please help.

Chris47daves, there is lots of help to be had here, but you gotta tell a whole lot more about your bike, it's history, modifications, kludge wiring, voltage readings. etc. etc. The search, and the FAQ will steer you. Picture posting is also useful to give a general idea of what you have. You might need a few more posts to do that. Welcome

The mistake most rookies make is assuming the 'hardware' is defective when generally the charging system itself is generally pretty bullet proof. Did you check all the 'hardware' before just dropping cash on replacements? V-reg, stator, field coil, rect? Bet they were fine. The rectifier is the easiest damaged especially if jump starting.

Did you check and clean the main ground? Did you check the in and out voltage of your ignition switch? Do those if not.

Have you checked for damaged wires? Have you cleaned/replaced EACH and EVERY bullet connector and block connector? Yeah, that doesn't sound like fun and it isn't but....... do it. EACH ONE can/will produce voltage loss. Add each one together and you get a dead battery. Your other option here is to buy a new wiring harness that has new connectors but then you gotta clean/replace the ends that each connects to. VintageConnections.com is one source for new bullets and blocks. Bite the 'bullet'.

Model and year of the bike in question? Voltage of battery at rest? Voltage reading from battery while motor is running and revs at 4,000 RPMs?

Did you install the new parts correctly? Are they stock replacements. The "C" in S-O-H-C doesn't stand for "clairvoyance". So provide some details and you'll get solutions.
