Lowering blocks?
« on: October 22, 2006, 12:23:13 PM »
Anyone have any idea how lowering blocks would otherwise affect the handling of my mostly stock 750K?  These would effectively lower the bike about 3", something my short legs might benefit from.

Thanks!

Look in their "chopper" catalog for the 11'' short shocks.
It is a much better way to lower the ass end of your scoot.
Looks better too...

if you only lower the rear, and not the front, it will effectively change your rake and trail. which would make your steering feel a little more relaxed. it probably wont be so much that you really notice. it definately wont make it difficult to ride. just a fine point to consider.

the lowering blocks move the mounting point of your shocks back further on the swingarm. this will give the swingarm more leverage to push against the springs with. it will make your current shocks/springs feel softer than they do now. if you have your spring preload set on the stiffest setting now, you may not like the softer feel.

it would probably be a good idea to check if your shocks are worn before going with blocks. if you have stock shocks, they are probably shot. if you are in need of new shocks, it would be wiser to go with shorty shocks over the blocks.

In my opinion, the blocks make my bike ride like a**.  The previous owner had them installed when I got the bike and I removed them before riding it.  I am 6' 4", he must have been a short little squirt.  I tried them out one night, pushing the fork tubes up 1" too.  That lasted about three miles.  It rode horrible.  I immediately went home and put things the way they should be.  Anyone need a set of blocks?

Sounds pretty unanimous...I'll stay away from the blocks.

I was okay with it as is, just had to lean a little at stops.  I've put on a shorter, custom seat I found on Ebay, which has been great.  I just keep thinking about all the stuff to be done over the winter...though I really should focus on the electrics and mechanical stuff.  I may even go back to commuting on my SR500 so that I can start a little sooner on the Honda...and get back to the Triumph project we've ignored for the last two months!

Another thing to try is to use a 1979 DOHC cb750 swingarm on a SOHC 750. the DOHC swingarm is a couple inches longer (I forget how much) and will move the shocks back some. Has a similar effect of lowering blocks and will definatly affect the handeling as you are moving the wheel back as well. still better and safer than the lowering blocks themselves. I personally would go the shorty shock route, but there are some that like that lowered dragbike kind of look. just putting it out there.

                    Hey Geeto,
I know that the 750 SOHC swing arm is shorter than the 500/550 but, my
question is, do you know if the 750 DOHC swing arm is longer than the 500/550? What
I'm getting at is, if the 750 DOHC and the 500/550 swing arms are the same length,
you'd have more options and if the 750 DOHC swing arm is longer, I might be looking for
                    one of those myself.

I put a  81 cb 650 swingarm on one of my bikes. have not riden it yet so I cannot comment on that, but it is about 1.5 to 2 inches longer than the sohc 750 and the shock mounts are further back.
