Broken Exhaust Stud - 78' CB550K
« on: June 25, 2015, 04:58:57 PM »
I was installing the exhaust on my 78' CB550K today and I accidentally over-tightened the nut and snapped the stud on the exhaust manifold...how screwed am I?   :'(

How much thread is showing on the stud? I've freed broken studs before by locking two nuts together on the exposed threads and backing the stud out.

Then either go to the hardware store and buy new studs or get some from the dealer.

Had it happen too without enough threads to do the above.  Was able to get a tiny sharp punch and "unscrew" the stud by hitting a tangent edge of it counterclockwise.  BikeBandit shipped me a few in  just a couple days.

I'm in the same boat.  My exhaust stud broke flush to the surface.  I really don't want to pull the head and pay a machine shop to replace.  What now?  It's a small diameter stud( CB350F) and drilling doesn't look easy.

We suck gto_ron  >:(...although mine is not flush. I believe about 3/8" is showing. Think that can be threaded out?

Well if you don't want to get left-handed drill bits - something always recommended but something I've never gotten despite it being a good idea, you can probably grab the rest with vice grips and remove it.  They aren't in there that tough.

I personally use a stud remover, 3/8" is a pretty good surface to grab onto.
Of course in the past when I completely wrecked a stud, I panicked and did quite a number on the hole - don't do this.  You can look it up, it was posted on this very forum.  Embarrassing to say the least. :-[

Nope,
Your best bet is to thread on a nut and weld it to the 3/8"that remains.  I don't have that option so my situation  still sucks.
