So my father in law gave me some stuff.
« on: June 25, 2015, 10:51:28 AM »
So a few weeks ago my father in law dropped off some "stuff" he had hidden in his sheds out back. He knows I love motorbikes, Hondas in particular, but that didn't stop him from unloading a few project bikes he had hidden away from when he was younger. He's over it and passed them on to me. (Sidebar; Is it weird that it took him 10 years to drop this all on me? Maybe he was making sure it would shake out ok with his daughter and I. Ha!)

Here's what the haul consists of:

A Hodaka pit/trail? bike, some kind of small displacement thumper (125cc?) Yamaha dirt bike, a 1980 Honda Passport C70 and what I consider the cream of the crop; a basket case 1974 Kawasaki H2 Triple Mach 4.

Sh!t I've got a lot to do on top of my K3 CB750 hardtail project. Best of all, there was only 1 Black Widow in the pile! LOL I'm really keen on the C70 and H2. Did I mention I don't know sh!t about two strokes? Hahahaha!! Rick.

Will do, I still need to sort through all the stuff, its quite a bit. I just got back from a surf trip in Bali so that C70 will probably get looks first. The amount of scoots over there is insane! I'll post photos soon. Rick. :)

Definitely, because the current one has limited you to what, 50 bikes?

Rick - you are living the dream! Surfin in Bali and you come home to an H2!
I just restored an H1 and am about to start on an H2.  They are a whole 'nother animal!

Kawi2strokes.com is a pretty good forum for info , but nowhere near as good as this one.
Let me know if I can help.

Haha, thanks SteveO. Bali was amazing!! I've done some research on the Kawi 2strokes. Like I mentioned earlier, I don't know anything about these bikes other than a lot of dudes didn't fare so well riding them when they came out. Hence the Widowmaker moniker. :) I looked at that site you mentioned and it has some good info, but man we are spoiled here at SOHC4. Rest assured, I'll be picking your brain when the H2 is up to bat. I'll be in the garage later today after it cools down and will try to post up some pictures tonight.  :)

So I don't know much about Hodakas either. Hahaa!! What I got was a little mini bike with a Briggs and Stratton motor and an old Hodaka seat slapped on top. LOL it'll be a cool (loud) little bike for running around camp in the desert. ;)

And here is the H2. She's rough but mostly there. Unfortunately the engine was split and left open. In my small amount of research these engines don't seem to be as easily accessible as our beloved SOHC4s.

Hey Rick....I'm not surprised that the engine needs a rebuild, that has been my experience with the two H's I have.
They have crank seals that dry out and leak, causing bad running and engine failure [my H1 had a piston disintegrate!]
The good news in the crank can be rebuilt for about $400 as long as it and the rods are in good shape.
Then you'll need to bore the cylinders [$150-200] and buy a piston kit [$300].  The best thing is you do not have to worry about a camshaft and valves!

That's what I'm gathering in my research. I almost want to just hand it off to someone that's knows what they are doing. I found a dude that does just that in bootstriples.com but I know it'll be a pretty penny. I think he's in SoCal too but I'm not past actually doing it myself. Just need to sort through the thing and see what we have to work with and gain more knowledge on the engine. There are some YouTube videos that are a ton of help. ;)

I considered having Boots rebuild my H1 motor, he quoted me $4500! No way.

I luckily have a buddy who is a certified tech, he helped me with mine.

There is a guy named Danny on the Triples forum that has [literally] tons of Triples parts for sale. He is in Cali, dont remember what City though. Decent guy to deal with, I've gotton some good parts from him. His email is dhg1337@aol.com

If you find a motor, I may be interested in yours. Along with the H2 I bought came an [motorless] roller that I may bring back to life one day.

LOL, that's the same email I sent off to! He's parting out a roller due to title issues. I found his posting on the Kawi forums for sale section. The engine is a '72, but he hasn't responded as of yet. I'll keep you posted on the progress if any, oh and he's on Monterey, Ca. Thanks, Rick.

Thanks Faux Diddy, I think the CT1 engine is OK, although I'll need to do a compression test but it moves freely when I kick it over and it sounds good. I want to say a lot of the parts may cross over between the CT1 and AT1 but again my familiarity with these bikes is comparable to my knowledge of the Kawasaki 2 smokers, hardly any. Although that's changing day to day.   :) Rick.

If its not too much trouble, that'd be awesome. My email may have gone into his spam bin too. I'm not yet a member on the kawi forums either, just lurking around like I did here before I actually started a thread. I appreciate it Stev-O. Rick.

No, never gave him an offer. Just asked if it was still available and if it was, what he was asking for it. He must have me confused for someone else.  :)

I didnt think you did something wrong, you seem like a stand up guy.

He just emailed me, says he now has a motor for sale for $1300.
He just bought five H2 motors!

Whaaat?? That's awesome! I for sure wouldn't have low balled him like that, I was thinking $1500 as an offer if he got back with me. I just hope he doesn't think it WAS me trying to beat him up on the engine price. I don't want him thinking the guys over here at SOHC4 are bums. LOL in any case, I think I'm going to give the rebuild a go. I've got most all of the bike here now but the engine will probably be what I get to first. Thanks again Stev-O!

Rebuilding what you have is prolly your best bet.  Highly recommend rebuilding your crank, the seals will leak if they have not been changed in 40 years.
It was $395 to have my H1 crank rebuilt, H2 should be the same.

The the crank is already accessible so I'll take your advise. I know they need to be rebuilt and the bike had 24k miles. Any sources for the service? Thinking of getting the rods shot peened as well.

There are two guys the the Triples forum recommends, Charlie is in MD [I used him] and Dave in CA.  Give Dave a shout and get an estimate, just get the basic unless you plan to race!
You may want to ask about cylinder boring too. He may not do it but I bet he knows someone. I paid $50/hole. You'll have to buy piston kits to give to the machinist to have it bored properly.
I had my machinist measure the cylinders to ensure I ordered the proper oversize pistons [about $300 for three Wiseco piston kits - piston, rings and wrist pins]
I'm about to rebuild my H2 motor as well, but my basket case came with a crank already rebuilt.
