Sprocket cover STUCK 750
« on: June 24, 2015, 04:15:06 PM »
75 cb 750.. Head on lower screw is buggered.
I think my only choices here are, slot the head with a dremel..( and hope it breaks loose without splitting head)... Or welding to it.
Welding will be tricky, our only choice where bike is,  is small mig. I think I can get a bead on one side(top), but two (sides) would be way better.

Once the head is gone we are hooped.
May just have to holesaw around bolt boss or smash cover..any ideas..?

OK.. Let's. See you wiggle that out, with no clearance and 2 1/2 inches of bolt holding it.. ;D ;D >:(  ;D
  I already that of that..
I think I should mig a nut on,  rather than a bar..get a good enough bead/ penetration with the nut.

Depends on what you need to do....................in the motor....................you could remove the left case cover and give yourself some room...........but that may cost a gasket :(

Yes, do a rosette weld through the hole in the nut; a larger nut may work better?

Probably one of the worst screws/bolts on the bike to remove.. Drilling head off..youre sunk.

Yep, that's definitely a bad one since the cover has to lift up instead of being able to pull straight out. I have an engine sitting to the side, I can check to see whether pulling the trans cover would help.

On the F engine, I always have to remove the left side cover to get the chain cover off, thinking about shaving the chain cover a bit, since it is getting old.

Since one of your options was smasing the cover, I agree with a try to weld a nut on there. Does the mig you have available have gas, or are you using flux wire ?  I've found that the gas really helps when welding to old bolts/nuts etc.  It seems the last 2 or 3 bikes I've had in the shop have had broken/damages screws that the PO has left for me.  Good luck.

Mad, dont go to any trouble, it will come off one way or other, was going to pull trans cover off anyway... Pretty sure the part of the cover the screw goes thru, encloses the screw..
I got spare covers... Just pointing out , this one can be a bugger, so dont rlound it off.

Yep, the cover definitely captures the full length of the screw. If removing the trans cover allows the sprocket cover to shift outwards just a little (if the screw head is lost, leaving just the shaft of the screw) then you might be able to cut the screw between the sprocket cover and the lower case. Curious to see how it turns out. Fortunately this is one of the few bolts I have never had to deal with as far as being difficult to remove, and I've dealt with plenty!

punch and hammer. Put the punch on the out edge of the screw and hammer in the direction to unscrew it. I can't remember a time when that has not worked for me. Very effective.

Two problems with that. Where the bike is I would have to resharpen a punch. But i think we already tried it....the screwed laughed at me. The problem is getting in there..ifyour first dimplecscrews up , there is not much room to try again..

Frank,

I think Peewee is right. I have broke that lower trans bolt casing horsing it out and it just crumbles the case casting easily.

If you can use your dremel with a cutting tool it might work out better.  It is pretty fragile so any impact will not go so well.  My K1 is missing that dam bolt in my case and is annoying.

Cut across the cover ABOVE the lower bolt, then just run one bolt.

I use a product called Krawl, soak it with drops of the oil. About two days of the Krawl treatment....Carefully slot the screw head and use the old fashion impact screwdriver..  Tap tap,That's it.

What about drilling right into the bolt... gets rid of the head AND might allow for a bit of outward movement to remove the cover? Probably likely to damage the cover, though.
