Long or short end of intake manifold stud?
« on: June 28, 2015, 02:01:01 PM »
I'm finally assembling the head on my '72 CB500, and realized that the intake studs are slightly asymmetric. Which end goes into the head?

I assumed it was the longer end, as it's got a tapered end (see pic), but when that's snugged in (very gently), there's hardly enough threads to fasten down the intake manifolds?

Thanks for any help.

I guess that means it goes the other way — but that means not snugging them in at all. So which end in? The tapered bit of the dished bit? The tapered is the longer.

You may have to set the depth of them with a caliper or guage, ie they may not be bottomed on install.
If its out too far and nut bottoms it won't tighten.

I took a closer look at them and from the corrosion, etc., can tell that it was the shorter end that's in the cases. I am snugging them down to a bit more than finger tight, and there's ample room for nuts, etc., so I had them the wrong way around.

You're right in that I don't want to bottom them out, but half-way up the shoulder seems about right. Thanks!

I would add some Red LocTite to them for a good solid install. It will also help prevent them from stripping out.
