clutch replacement tools
« on: June 29, 2015, 07:09:15 PM »
My bike is just on the side stand and I'm having issues with the clutch spinning while trying to remove the retaining nut on the basket.  I don't have an impact gun, just a cordless drill/driver and a breaker bar.  I was wondering if this is the tool to buy to keep the clutch from spinning so I can get the nut off?

that tool you posted wont work on a 750 the clutch. The clutch isn't a typical design and you can't utilize it. Put the bike in gear and hold the rear brake, that will solve your spinning issue.  I have been using my Milwaukee M18 driver for everything on my engine build, in fact just today i used it to loosen the clutch hub nut did it with no sweat...

I made a tool for that just recently,  but to stop the basket while taking the nut off I used just flat steel bar tightened to two of the four aluminum M6 holes in the basket.

The tool will work better I believe, but the flat bar was enough to hold the basket to get the nut off.

My 1/2" drive barely fits the socket, but I do need to pick up an adapter for my drill.  Mine is a smaller Milwaukee, but haven't had a chance to try it on this yet.

If still assembled, and you are alone, put in gear and tighten the brake adjuster nut to engage the rear brake ala ggc above. easier than pushing on the pedal and trying to loosen it with third hand.

Bike is on the ground because I hated taking the exhaust off and stacking enough boards to get the bike over the center jack.  If my drill doesn't work, a buddy of mine has a dewalt impact that might do the trick.

I don't know if the clutch basket from my 650 is the same as the 750; but for the center nut i use an old screwdriver and a few hits with a hammer and it spins right off. Few hits to tighten. Depends on the person but i have had good luck doing it this way.

I tried that. All I did was chew up the notches.

I had one nut not possible to move despite correct tools for the nut. I had used very tough thread sealer back in the 80's.
I grinded the nut in one of the four notches. Almost thru it, but not touch the axis. The last possible to hammer with a punch until it cracked open. The thread sealer held the nut all the time. I had tried heating it with a heat gun before.

I was taking the engine apart completely so all metal shavings were not an issue then.
