CB750K2 oil pump question.
« on: July 01, 2015, 10:24:44 AM »
Does anyone know...

Does the pop off valve in the oil pump effectively cap oil pressure at 60psi +/- ?

My relatively new engine is reading about 60+/-. Last year it read closer to 70. The only thing different is I put Elans kit in, which had a new pressure spring in it.

I did install an oil cooler as well. But it has a shut off valve right above the adapter which has been switched off, meaning no oil flow into the cooler. So, just a few inches of oil line has been added for this test.

I've noticed that too, at idle under 1K it holds pretty steady at 60, revved up high enough it moves higher, but not too much. I can't find the post from Elan but he did mention that the bypass valve kicks in when it goes past roughly 62-65psi. And this is a good thing on these overbuilt pumps to avoid oil leaks. I'll post up the link if I find it again where he explained it better than I did ;D

Mine at idle is about 20, when running goes between 60-80, I don't spend too much time reading it, just quick seconds glance and keep my eyes on the road.

20 here on fully warm engine with 20W50.  10 with fully warm engine with 15W40.

After extensive highway driving - like pushing the ton for several hours - she would show 10 with 20W50 and the oil light would come on in idle.

You can tell I find the oil gauge amusing feature  :)

Thanks Rafi et al. That's what I was thinking. Would like that post from Elan if you find it.

Like that gauge BTW,  ;).
