CB350F emulsion tubes
« on: July 06, 2015, 05:12:05 PM »
Hey,

Another project. Really old carb set. Emulsifier stuck. 2 questions:

1) is there a way to deal with a stuck emulsion tube? I've poured boiling water, carb cleaner repeatedly, over many days. So I assume the next step is to take the needle out--

2) with this particular one is there a trick to bending the tabs that secure the link arms (inside the top carb cover); I just can't figure it out, other than some needle-nose pliers (which of course can't find any of mine anywhere)?

Thanks!

The emulsion tube doesn't screw out, it just slides in/out.  However, that's with clean carbs.

Right, I know that as well, having them in an easier, cleaner carb previously. Just wondering what other tricks there are to get them out.

Thanks!

Take out the slide and needle, and press out the tube from the top using a wood Dowell.

What Flybox1 said. If you can't get the top disassembled, then I've had success using an allen wrench inserted about 1/4" into the emulsifier tube and levered over to "catch" in the tube as you pull out. I wouldn't put too much force on the tube doing that though. Best method is what Flybox1 mentioned.

I'd be super-super careful with this technique. One of the emulsion tubes on my 350F was bent and they're nearly unobtanium these days. Once bent the needle will never seat/position right in the jet again, so I'd avoid this technique. As camel said, Flybox's method of pushing out from the top with a wooden dowel is the way to go. Just keeping working that until it works.

Great, what's the "right" way to bend the tabs?

thanks!

One way to free stuck carb components is to use some heat from a heat gun or even a hair drier.

Use a pretty small flat-blade screwdriver. Get it between the bolt head and the tab and pry the tab out a bit. The tabs don't have to lay completely flat to get a socket on the bolt, you just need to bend them away a bit. Nothin' to it.
