Lubricant or Oil for Ignition points?
« on: June 26, 2015, 10:07:18 AM »
I recently replaced my ignition points and condensers with some new Daiichi parts. However, the kit that they came in also contained two small packets of lubricant or oil of some sort. I assume that each is to be used on each of the points but I really don't have a clue where it goes. I don't want to damage my new parts by not applying this lubricant, but I also don't want to make mess of oil behind the points cover if its not necessary.

Anyone used these packets of oil before?

Thanks in advance.

Some setups used a grease on the points block heal.

Some setups use a heavy oil on a felt wick.

Not sure what the 550 uses but I suspect a felt wick, soak it down with the oil and make sure it makes good contact with the points cam.

Pardon my ignorance but what is a 'heavy' oil?

Thanks Irutt,

This makes sense. The cb550 K4 has a small "brush" that makes contact with the cam that presses against the points to open and close them. I will add lube to this as you suggested.

Thanks.

Heavy oil, as in not like sewing machine oil. Something that will better stay put. But not 140w.

If dry the points bakelite contact points against the rotor will wear, point gaps will become smaller, and smaller much quicker......
Oil the felt mounted on the plate that lubricate the rotor where the points have contact. Too thick grease and the felt will not absorb it. Good idea to add some oil. Maybe once a year is Ok.

I have rather new TEC points without condensers when I use Hondaman ign module. Good lubricated rotor will make the lifetime when the points will not wear due to the very low current.

Yeah that Mallory stuff posted above is excellent.  Doesn't fling off when it gets hot

I doubt you would live long enough to use up 1/8 of a tube of the 'special' cam grease unless you need it for a stable of points equipped cars, trucks and bikes.  You'll be fine putting a match head sized dab of any brand dielectric or Synlube brand grease on the contact face of felt since most likely you have some of that already.

i found that dielectric grease (the readily available synthetic stuff) tended to sling off.  And since I was running one of FBstuff's cool see-through points covers, it was obvious.  One could imagine that having extra oil flying about where you want clean dry contacts (at all the wire/connector interfaces and of course on the points surfaces), wouldn't be optimal...  The mallory stuff stays put, it's not expensive, and it can be used for other things, like for example, lubing a new shifter shaft seal.
