76 750k moody starter
« on: July 02, 2015, 08:27:44 AM »
Hi All, first technical post here, but i just got a 76 750 k and i have some starter questions/problems.
First off, bike starts fine with kick start, usually 1st or 2nd try, in fact thats one of the reasons I wanted an older bike, a good old fashioned kick to fight with once in a while. However, being able to electric start is a nice option. When I got the bike, battery was almost dead but starter would at least click. Charged the battery and tried it but nothing. There is a load as the headlight goes out when start button is depressed, but no sounds or indication that anything is happening.

I want to do as much on the bike as possible myself, thoughts on where to start trouble shooting or what i can rule out

Thanks in advance

Lay a screwdriver across the contacts on the top of the solenoid behind the side panel with the ignition on and see if the starter/engine turns over for a first test. It will spark so be forewarned, make sure no gas leak etc.

Cali got me by 10 seconds   ;D ;D

Ok, so the first test worked, starter turns over, so i take it battery is ok, at least marginally to give enough juice. So wiring or switch issue somewhere leading up to the solenoid ? what is test 2 no that I have established it is not starter of batt?

One thing I did wrong before and blamed a warm 836 bore. My engine started with electric starter when cold, not when really warm after a rest at a gas station and refill. I had to use the kick start and full throttle. I frightened many....

I understood why a few years ago during my last restore. The ground cable from battery MUST be connected to frame close to the engine. I had ground cable connected under closest bolt holding the tool box.
Last time I connected under bolt head outside of the frame, paint scratched off under and thin layer of grease as rust protector. Some connect it between frame and engine, paint scratched. Now no problems to start it when warm.
