Is it me...or this forum?
« on: July 02, 2015, 07:24:02 AM »
Seems like the past few months I've been getting a lot of interrupted ads when viewing this forum.  I've tried to turn off pop-ups etc with my Firefox, but they still happen.  It also seems like the "back" button has stored a whole bunch of the same page being viewed, so that it doesn't return to the previously viewed list.

The advertisers don't seem to get wise to the fact that the annoyance they create will cause me to avoid their products. >:(  It's also getting to the point I won't want to read this forum. :P

I use IE, nothing special. No pop ups or interference, just the regular ads in the margins.

I have had the problem with the back button on firefox on various sites (not here). It just randomly happens.

I have adblock plus, noscript, and ghostery installed. No ads, no stupid bs popups. Just have to play around with noscript to make the sites work sometimes.

That's what I would surmise.  I have no problems with the site on several computers and OS's.

Use a different/better browser. Makes things Much better

I only ever use Firefox and have absolutely none of the problems mentioned, I suggest a good spyware/malware program and do a clean up of your computer {OP}...

I've used Malwarebytes a few times and it's done a great job when nothing else could find and eradicate the nasties.

Thanks for this link and for the other suggestions offered.

I downloaded this scan program and ran it a few times.  It seemed to find a lot of unwanted stuff that it reported to remove.  So far the system seems to behave without the previously reported problems.

As I read this there is an ad in the margin for a dating site with a very nice and provocatively dressed young lady, supposedly Russian, beckoning me to sign up. Don't think I'll be running Malwarebytes just yet! ;D

I get those ads too, and I run Malwarebytes.  Asians too. Cute, but I'm taken.

I haven't had ad issues....but forum member price issues. I put up a post looking for stator cover and clutch cover needed for 550/750.....every response was double or triple the going rate if I just went to eBay. I can get a clutch cover on eBay for $10-$13...but I had one forum member offering to sell me one for $40. WTF

Don't blame porn.

I use Ccleaner, in addition to Malwarebytes.  Every now and then(I use it weekly) your temp files, cookies and assorted crap need to be cleaned out.  Windows has a utility for this, but it is usually hidden from the less tech savvy crowd. It's another free one, and while there is a pay for version, the free one works well.  It does update from time to time.

If you don't clean out these things, it slows down your machine.

I use Kaspersky internet security and Ccleaner {free version}, been using both for years, I surf everything and everywhere. Recently had a hard drive problem that i thought may have been helped by some malware so I downloaded malwarebytes and used it for the first time, Not one thing detected, none, zilch, nada... I use Ccleaner every day, takes seconds and I have it set to clean cookies and temp files, never had a virus and never had malware or anything similar..... ;)

The real solution to malware is a product called Cylance. Unfortunately, they don't have a free or consumer version. It's efficacy rate when compared to everything else is astonishing, as most AV products are only about 30% effective.

If you're a responsible surfer, you probably won't suffer much infection, but if you receive heaps of spam emails and happen to have someone in the household "click" on them, well then that's where the fun begins...

If you have good internet security Cal, it warns you before opening anything in your inbox, I get a red box warning alert as soon as anything suspicious lands in my email, quite simple really, I've never had a virus and never had a problem with spam and never had a malware program on my system, I also have a great mate who is a very good computer tech... ;)

Yep, household mates who are good techs is a plus, but the Achilles heel of all malware programs is that they must recognize a virus, malware program, or PUP, RAT and so on. That is what critical: their knowledge base of what's bad. The product I mentioned uses a local algorithm to calculate the legitimacy of the binary files, and not a database, whitelist, or signature list.

Not trying to start a malware religious war, but I assure you, I could send you files that your program would pass and that you would open, and that would fcuk you up. It's (secure computing) been my industry for 28 years, trust me.

It would have to be a dedicated attack from someone I know big fella, and I would still have to open it on my system   ;D, I don't open anything I  wasn't expecting, I have several email accounts, they get used according to who it is i'm expecting a response too, I'm very cautious, besides, if opened in a Mail washer program, its  opened out side my computer so can't effect it one little bit.. . I know if my system is specifically targeted from outside it can be done, I'm not naive or stupid, but as i'm set up, and have been for a very long time, I feel secure, far more so that most, and thats all that counts.. I'm curious, what anti virus do you use...?

I knew someone would say that.. ;D  I have a good friend thats got some awesome computer stuff,  he works in the computer industry and is always updating and keeping up with everything thats new, I get some pretty good hand me downs, programs and advice, Once you've seen how easy it is to take over someones system and get access to all their personal details, i consider it insurance, Not paranoid, just careful.  8)  Cal, just read up on Cylance, sounds very good... ;)
