750 motors and seal kits
« on: October 25, 2006, 11:00:00 AM »
I have recently picked up a few motors and a 72' 750. There was oil leaking out of the head over the exhaust and a lot of smoke coming out of the pipes. Does anyone have suggestions as to what the best engine seal kits are?? One of the other engines looks to be from a 75....were there any improvements in the 75 motor that would make me want to swap to the newer motor??

Thanks!!

Buy OEM Honda kits.  There are some cheap sub-par knock-offs out there.  I learned the hard way.

As far as your 75 engine goes that depends on whether it is a F or K. The 75 F has a hotter cam and higher compression so it will perform better. Also the tranny has a better performance ratio.  It also depends on what year the other engines are. You need to look up the engine serial numbers to determine this.

Thanks! As far as I know the other motors are K models. I will have to reference the numbers when I get home. If I replace the seals in the top end should I machine the head for a good flat seat on the motor??

The current oem gaskets are made by Vesrah, and the Vesrah are cheaper than oem.

If I were going to machine the head surface to insure a good seal I'd also do the same with the top surface of the cylinders. An added benefit to this will be a slight compression/HP increase. Now, with head leaks in mind, you might want to consider a set of after market heavy duty cylinder studs such as APE (support our forum members). The OEM studs have a tendency to stretch ever so slightly allowing leaks. The other annoying area that leaks and which can be a greater leak, is the "biscuit" seals under the cam towers. Definitely replace these. Be forwarned, you can spend a bunch of $$$ if you start to get picky. Oh yeah, our member Mike Rieck does fantastic head work if you want some real HP. I'm sure that could be combined with milling the head/cylinder surfaces.
