Should I buy these rims
« on: December 04, 2020, 12:29:31 PM »
Damage on the rear rim pictured, set is 19” front 18” rear

Should I buy,  what should I offer, more importantly, can the rim be repaired will it be costly?

Should I just pass on them? I’m assuming these are Henery Abe wheels, someone correct me if I’m wrong.

Thanks

The 19" front is more common than the 18" rear.  That said they certainly don't grow on trees.  The Henry Abes aren't as nicely finished as Lesters but they are a good quality wheel.  The damage on the rear certainly looks like impact damage.  I would only buy the front wheel or if the seller is willing to basically throw in the rear wheel for a low price.  Otherwise that rear wheel is junk.  There used to be a place that fixed cast motorcycle wheels in the midwest.  You might want to Google cast wheel repair and see if it is even fixable and possible cost.

As far as price, I have no idea.  I bought my Henry Abes for a decent price but they needed powder coating and polishing.  You can find the HD ones on eBay for about $100+ each but for the CB750 they probably aren't going to be cheap.

Here's mine all finished:

The repair shop is called The Wheel Warehouse in Ohio.  Prices for crack repair and straightening for 17"-22" wheels is $225-$285.

I mostly agree with Scott except the part about the rear wheel being junk.  I'm sure it could be repaired, but is it cost effective? On the other hand, cant buy em at the Honda dealer

I’d agree wth Steve-0. At the right price ($400 or less?) I’d take a flyer at them. Looks like someone has been using them the way they are!

Is the damage to the rear at the same spike, both sides? As long as the rim is not out of round, a bit of welding up, grinding, and polishing might save it. Or, it would make a really nice hose reel in your shop!

there wasnt damage on both sides, the two pictures are of the same spot, the flash makes it look weird, the underside of the lip and a shot of it straight on. I feel like like he hopped a curb and came down and caught the lip.

I have a Morris wheel on my KZ1000 with similar, but less severe damage.  The edge is noticeably bent but not cracked.  It still rides surprisingly well at legal speeds.  Really just feels like any wheel with a moderate imbalance.  Never the less, it will get swapped out as soon as I get a new tire.  I hope it can be fixed as it is a quite rare and valueable wheel that was only used as oem equipment for the first 6 months or so of the Kz900 ltd.  I hope that Henry Abe gets fixed too.  I love all the different cast wheels from the seventies.
If it works good, it looks good...

Sean I have a Morris , with similar damage. If I put it in use, I will warm it using a temp stick and push it back. .
I dropped it from about 4.5 feet,  it hit asphalt and dug in a bit.
Similar damage to the one shown here. ..it's my feeling the Morris are tougher alloy than a Henry Abe or Shelby Dowd.
I have one of the last two, I can tell by the machined finish on it , it appears  to be softer alloy.
Similar damage, but the 2 Morris did not crack.. fwiw..

It's like a crayon,  make a line on work...when it melts you are the temp of that stick.
So you get bright amount of heat , but not too much.
For aluminum  body repair it is 450 degrees.
