Fenders and Lights, Help Pimp my 400F!
« on: July 06, 2015, 07:08:04 PM »
I'm going for the period (mid-late 70's) street modified look.  Something you'd see on the street with a few performance mods.  I've got new rims, Mac exhaust and new remote reservoir YSS shocks on order.  I'd like to add some new turn signals, kinda like these:

Black or aluminum?

Front fender. I was thinking of an aluminum one that DCC sells because it looks like stock but it should be trick for the time period.  I could go with a fiberglass one and paint it silver, or black?  Not sure I want it in blue, to me that seems more modern?

But what I really need is advice on a rear fender and tail light.  Any ideas?  I'm thinking a Lucas style tail light that's smaller than the huge stock unit, but what fender options are there?

I'd like to keep a 2 up seat but could go for a cafe style with the upholstered hump (w/o the fiberglass tail).  Where can I find a rear fender that fits?  I would think it needs to match the front, so are there any in aluminium?  I found one that's glass at DCC but not sure on fitment. Any advice appreciated.  Thanks.

I took a stock fender, drilled out the spot welds and separated it from the mount, then bobbed the front, moved it up and forward. Then I spot welded it to the mount under a lucas taillight and under the seat. That way you still have the rear bead all the way around and save the chrome if you want it. Could even be riveted. This was on a 750, I believe the 400 fender reduces in width at the mount, it might make it harder to do.  The lucas light tucks in under the sear back on a 400 too.

For the tail light you could always shrink it down and use the smaller HM-11RC from a 69-71 CB750

I'm using early 750 turn signals on my project 400F and have test fitted the early taillight also. I may go stock on the taillight though, the jury's still out.

Here is mine. Cut and put on a flexible alu\plastic edge protector. Installed a classic round tail light from Dime City. The license plate doubles as a fender aswell :)

In pics maybe!  The fenders are a bit rust pitted and dented, but I'm thinking I don't need to pay for new or reconditioned.  Also isn't there a law against cutting up OEM parts on treasured bikes like this?

Also note I took off the front fender supports. I thought I read somewhere not to do this but I can't imagine why. Plenty of other bikes with heavy steel fenders that don't use them.

Amen! Go find a basket case to screw up not a perfectly nice restorer like the this. EBAY is a good resource for good used parts like fenders and whatever.

There is no shortage of people cutting these bikes up into "cafes" and "Brats" but there is becoming a shortage of restored CBs. Just look at the prices of some of them lately.

Anyone have or ever see one of these rear fenders?  Painted to match OEM colors but I can't find any pics on the bike though.
