seat foam replacementQ? K0 750
« on: June 29, 2015, 09:50:58 PM »
I'm the proud owner of a new Yamiya red seat foam pad.  My old one is turning to dust and falling through the holes in the pan. I'm concerned about bending the pins inside the pan up to remove the trim speed nuts and rebending them afterwards. I'm reinstalling the original vinyl which is in awesome condition and must be put back on.  Anyway, has anyone done it and do you have any helpful  tips?
I've done an F1 750 seat with a new cover/old foam, it came out awesome but the trim is different.

subscribed!  -I have a new seat cover on its way for my 75 550F. It's seat has the same chrome trims with pins that have been bent over after the push nuts were installed. Currently my plan is to carefully remove the push nuts by pulling on the three tangs that hold them to the pins, and then I was gonna try to remove the chrome strips without straightening the pins as I am scared of breaking them off!

Hi Don.
Any chance you could put a picture up of your new yamiya red seat foam?
My old KO had the original seat on it in pretty good condition when I bought it but the foam inside was a bit crumbly.
I bought one of those aftermarket seats from David silver spares so that I did not ruin the original one.
Was not aware you could even buy a replacement foam.

I'll get a pic, it looks just like the original ones I've seen pictures of. when I get brave enough to try it I'll post a comparison picture too.
On the push nuts I've used a 90* o ring pick to pull up on the locking tabs where they bite onto the stem. sometimes a twisting motion will almost "unscrew" them.
If I remember the foam was around $400 once, the dropping value of the yen/dollar  and other factors have reduced the price quite a bit.

It feels like there's a hard ducktail form inside of it.  the foam is heavy and feels like a silicone foam or something. I suspect it's the original type.

So the question was, can you straighten the pins without breaking them or can you leave them bent over while removing and replacing the cover?

Hello Don, Funny you ask about trim pins. I was wondering/going to attempt the same thing. I read  somewhere a while back about cover installation and to anneal pins [heat then cool, according to dictionary] so they don't break. Not sure how to best accomplish that, but that's what I read. Keep us posted.

Apparently that would occur after removal.

I took mine down to the upholsterer and had them put a good qulaity high desnity foam in and install the cover for me. They did a way better job then I could ever do.

So it wasn't easy, but I managed to get the push nuts off the bent over trim pins with two o ring picks and a small screwdriver.
I found some small dome-head screws & nuts that could work as trim pins if I end up breaking the original aluminium ones.
I slightly straightened two of them without breaking them before I got them out, but I am thinking of trying the annealing trick on them before attempting any further straightening - I was thinking stick them in the oven on max temp for a while and then turn off the oven and leave them in there to cool slowly.

My dilema is the foam filler material used to glue the cover to the back panel of the seat - I don't know what this stuff is -half of it stayed stuck to the old seatcover. It is like bondo except squishy like rubber! Any one know of a good substitute for this? - my best idea is to fill it with a layer of bondo, sand it flat and glue the cover to it with contact adhesive?
