Idling clutch noise
« on: July 11, 2015, 08:14:52 AM »
I've been having problems with my clutch in general. It'll pop out of gear or grind a bit sometimes if I catch it at the wrong time. I know I'm going to need to rebuild it but was hoping it would last me through the riding season if I just took it easy.

Anyways my question is when the bike is idling I can hear kind of a clunking sound down there but when I pull the clutch cable in it goes away. Does that mean my clutch problems are caused by something being loose or I don't have something set right?

Which bike have you got? 750s make a fair racket if not synced properly, Quieter with the clutch in is pretty standard, quieter again while in gear with the clutch in.
Not sure if the smaller motor clutches do it.
Search for clutch rattle, and adjusting clutch.

It's a 78 CB750

I went out this morning and popped off that cover to see how what things looked like and found that the nut on the adjuster screw was loose which was causing the the little lever to not seat right. I got it back on and adjusted it as far out as I could to help with the rattling and things seem about 100 times better.

The small screw that will press inwards on the clutch lifter plate must not be completely tightened. Tighten it with a screwdriver until it stop, then release 1/4 turn. Lock with the nut.

Just a FYI for anyone else looking in here with 'clutch rattle'. In 77 Honda updated the clutch basket and plate setup to eliminate most of the rattle. If you have a pre-77 and you want to eliminate the rattle either search here for the 'field fix' Honda first used or replace your clutch and basket with a 77/78 model.
