71 CB500 - Shift Drum Stopper Bolt ???
« on: September 07, 2014, 02:13:55 PM »
Did a search, found one old thread, but it wasn't clear to me from that, so apologies if this is an old question...

Rebuilding a 71 CB500, and finding something odd.  When the bolt came out I have what is shown on the upper right side of this diagram (no spring and ball).

There is a detent on the shift drum where the spring/ball would locate when it's in neutral. I have a Honda parts manual for the K0-K2 (71-73) and it seems to indicate that the spring/ball was used only in the 71 and not 72 or 73.  What's up with this?  Looks like it needs the spring/ball to make shifting into neutral work like it should?

the diagram in the box on the right is what they mostly have, the spring and ball wasn't used for long and I think there was a factory fix to update it,the drum is still sloppily located with 500s and can move laterally somewhat, the collar (#22) wears or cracks often.

Thanks dave500.  It looks like the parts for the spring/ball setup are still available, does that help the shifting action?  I'd guess if Honda got rid of it, no....

Dave,

How do you tell if the collar is too far worn?

Hi all. I see this is an old post but have a relevant question. I have a K2 and was thinking of taking out the stopper to check the part #22 discussed above. If I do that will the part #22 collar fall off on the inside and get jammed up and need the motor apart to get it out? Or will it just come out with the stopper and be all good?

Advice appreciated thanks.
