Newbie, starting a restoration of 76 CB550F
« on: July 13, 2015, 04:38:51 PM »
So, now that the kids are grown and out of the house, I've decided to take up a hobby.
Bought an old 76 CB550F and I'm going to try my hand at restoring it and customizing it to my liking.
Glad there are forums on the interwebs that I can glean valuable knowledge and insight from!!

I had bikes when I was in school, but haven't had one for 20+ years.
This will be a challenge, but I hope a rewarding adventure too!

(so, quick question... the tank on this one is in pretty bad shape, and not the stock tank for a 550F (looks like its a CB550, not the F "super sport" tank).
Have been looking for a 550F super sport tank on ebay and the web, but not finding a lot out there.
Is there an aftermarket site where those could be ordered?
Also, whats the "compatibility" between other bikes?  Like, could a CB750 tank be put on a CB550F?

cheers!
John

The big difference between the F and K tanks is how the seat mates to them (aside from their shape differences). You can buy aftermarket tanks, but they won't likely fit the stock F seat.

Cruise the Parts for Sale section and you're apt to come upon an F tank from a member, if that's what you want for a true restore.

Welcome.....I'm also currently restoring a 550F.  Luckily, I do have a nice tank but I was in that same boat before.  I ended up using a tank from a '77-78 550K, they seem to be more plentiful.
The shape is the same, only difference is the petcock bung, which was no big deal to me, wasn't doing a 100 point restore.
I found the tank on eBay, it was super clean on the inside, nearly dent free on the exterior.

I may be interested in your tank once you find another.
