CB550 - removed/reinstalled rear wheel, now brake is gone?
« on: July 10, 2015, 06:32:24 PM »
Took off my wheels, had new tires installed.

Re-Installed everything, hooked up the rear brake linkage, never touched the adjusting rod at all, now when I press on the rear pedal, there is zero stop. It bottoms out without even CLOSE to applying the rear brake.

Is there something inside the rear brake hub that I should have looked at before reassembly?

I'm going to take the wheel off again tomorrow and look it over.

Also, I snapped the spring that connects the rear brake light switch because it bottomed out too hard. Frustrating. Anyone know where to get a quick replacement for that?

Did you put in new shoes since you got it? If not perhaps the pad on the shoes have fallen off.

Didn't touch the pads, I'll look inside and make sure they didn't fall off.

Note:

Prior to the new tires, the brake was completely fine. I was riding it regularly.

Thanks RB

so if you didn't touch the adjuster, you must have instead removed the brake actuation arm - when reinstalling it onto the splines there's two little pimples that tell you where to locate it - yours must be angled too far forward?

Yeah I took the arm off the splines and left the adjuster completely in place and "non-adjusted" if you will.

I will look for the dimples and take apart re-assemble tomorrow.

Always a struggle with these old machines.

A couple of shots that show orientation of the levers:

Notice how the brake rod connector is positioned at the pedal shaft with the curve to the bottom.

FYI got this fixed. Simply needed the attached arm at a different angle so it would engage fully when pressing the rear brake lever. All the help was appreciated and aided in my fix.

Funny how the world works — I just had this problem yesterday after re-installing my rear brake! It was indeed a question of lining up the dimples on the pedals. Thanks again for your superlative photos, Ron.

Great info, Sohron. You knpw, I own my bike since 1980 and never knew it had these little dots. Not that I needed them (so far I never had to detach these levers) but it is good to know.

Sohron: A favor please? Would you mind posting "GET YOUR SUNGLASSES ON NOW - PIX TO FOLLOW" prior to every time you put up one of the (gorgeous) detail shots of your (perfect) bike(s).  Damn things are so impossibly shiny and well lit my retinas scream for mercy.

Thank you.
