CB750 Side cover swap from K7 to K1
« on: July 15, 2015, 03:15:43 PM »
Hi there!

I'm interested in swapping the side covers on my K7 to the K1 covers. I know that given the form this is not going to bolt right on, so I'm interested in suggestions or even better, a detailed brakedown of all the parts I need to swap. I'm guessing I'd need a new oil tank for this operation, but is that everything? Do I have to relocate the panel holders with rubber inserts by means of welding? Will my K7 oil hoses fit the K1 tank connectors? Will there be a bigger problem i haven't thought about (i.e. the frame opening to small/big), etc.?

Any help is much appreciated!

Cheers,
Frosty

new oil tank, maybe lines as well.  I dont know.
relocate oil tank mounts
relocate (weld) cover mount tabs on both sides

or...just get some cool new covers from fb-stuff.com and paint them to match  ;)

Thanks Flybox, that doesn't sound so hard. As long as there's no differences in frame geometry so that it would look weird in the end...

PM FrankenFrankenstuff - he makes side covers and would know the difference in mounting tabs.

A little cutting and welding never killed nobody. Especially since my frame has crappy paint in that area anyway after the rear loop was welded on. Getting an K1-K6 oil tank is not hard either and once the tank is attached the mounting holes for the cover are already in place on that side. But if there would be issues with frame geometry / sizing after i spend money on the parts just to find out i can't make it look like K1 that would be really disappointing.

Thanks, I'll check it out. If the frame turns out to be similar in the area of the triangle to the older ones I'm guessing it's ok, but the oil hoses seem to run on the outside of the frame's tubing up until K6 and inside on the K7. don't know if there might be an issue there. I've also read that the motor was shifted a bit to the side on K7 upwards. Those are the things that I'm afraid the most... having it looking somewhat crappy in the end. Would be great if somebody that has both models could comment on this.

I've got some left side covers for a K0 I can check this weekend against my K8. Don't think I have anything for the right side though so I can only do a 50% comparison.
