CB550 bad sound on deceleration in first gear (VIDEO)
« on: July 19, 2015, 07:04:07 PM »
Hey all, another week, another problem  :-\

So I just replaced my oil filter, clutch friction plates, springs and oil (you can follow in my other thread)

You can hear it in this video @0:21 and 0:39, but my bike now make a very audible "CLACK CLACK CLACK CLACK" noise in first gear when coming to a stop, with the clutch pulled in (disengaged)

In this video I accelerate from 1st up to 2nd gear, cruise, shift down, and come to a stop in 1st with the clutch pulled in.

The gears are also extremely difficult to change after warming the bike up/feels like the clutch is dragging. I've adjusted the clutch properly, but that noise is very concerning.

Any ideas what this noise could be?

Wow that sounds nasty. Are your clutch plates in correctly? Did you soak them prior to installing?

Don't know either on that. Strange.

put it up on the center stand and just start working things by hand to see if you can get a clue.

Is the chain too tight, what condition are the chain and sprockets? I've had some similar sounds with a well worn chain and also too tight, but that was on acceleration. Never know though.

How does the electric start work? Possibly the starter clutch is giving away? The little bits may be spinning and falling out of place? Just a guess.

I was thinking maybe the chain and sprockets too, but, did this noise just start after you changed the plates and springs? If so, then you definitely have something wrong with the installation. You say that you have the clutch adjusted properly. I am assuming you mean for play at the lever. What happenes if you over adjust it and have no lever play, does it get better?

Also check to make sure the circlip is seated that holds the clutch basket.

 Check your drive chain tension.

Does it only happen in 1st? Try clutching from 2nd or even 3rd to a stop? Try shifting into neutral and releasing the clutch then coasting to a stop? What happens if you kill the motor then coast to a stop? Do you feel a jerking when it makes this noise?

Yeah it almost sounds like the drive chain, but that was the first thing I checked and it's completely fine.

Cheers!

Did what you suggested and it indeed only happens in first. Clutching in from 2nd and 3rd is fine. Same with neutral. I definitely feel a jerking/pulsing when it's making that noise. Does that mean you have an idea of what it could be? Something in the tranny?

Nope, haha. Not sure if my logic is sound, but to me that rules out a drive chain/sprocket issue.

Did you try it with hitting the kill switch so the bike is off while you come to a stop in first?

Can you tell where the noise is coming from? Like, right side rear or front left or something?

Also, I'm not sure if this is really bad to keep testing, as I think someone mentioned. Might be best just to pull the clutch cover of you haven't already.

Probably not helping, but it sounds almost like the traditional "CB750 rattle"... which is often clutch/primary/cam chain related.

I would start with your clutch. You touched it last and then the noise started. Take it out, disassemble fully, and reassemble (slowly).
