Say you have a bike that is registered now, but you want to do a full rebuild over the winter or over next year or two or three

Do you just let the registration expire and renew it when she is back on the road?

No problem in Michigan since we don't have inspections, back taxes and all the other nasty stuff I read about---   not yet that is anyways---

That's pretty much all you need to do in New Jersey.
The key thing is that with it registered, you need to have insurance or they don't let you register it here.

So, I don't know what your plan is but if you don't register it, then you probably could drop the insurance coverage during your rebuild.\

Probably the easiest way to do it right there. Not sure about Virginia, but there might be a small fee upon registering the bike again a few years down the road. Otherwise, you could just turn the tag in while you work on it.

Yes, in Virginia  there is no registration without insurance either.

I am still gonna ask a DMV when I get there, often thery are helpful

 Talk to your insurance company.  They may suspend the policy and take note of the mileage. Only charge you a dollar or two a month. That way,  the tag remains  current and you don't have to deal with taxes, tags, DMV, etc.

70CB - In VA, because its still titled to you, Propery Tax will still accrue. Registration can expire without penalty. Up to your Homeowners policy as to whether they would cover the loss if you allow vehicle insurance to expire.

Personally, I would just renew for 3 years and call it done. But its your $16...

Is that for antique tags?  My registration comes as $28.75 a year.

In NJ if you don't reregister you have to turn in your plates. If you don't when you go to register again they'll wack you with back registration.

In NJ you have to turn in your plate and get new one, which would actually save you $65 for the year.

No historical or collector plate in your state?  If you have people in Ohio, you can register for a historical plate....one time money of $28....don't have to show insurance card...no inspections....and it's good for as long as you own.  Or let it go and reregister by mail in Vermont when you're done with your project.....no penalty, no insurance...etc.

Yeah, Dorothy 2nd gear is worn out, I ride her shifting through and there are other area worth of attention.  She is due for renewal in August, I hope I will have the K3F back together by than.

Here in California we have to reg it as "non-op", cost about $30.00 and you just have to pay for tags when you want to put it back on the road.

I got and answer from DMV:

Thank you for visiting www.dmvnow.com.

If you cancel your vehicle liability insurance coverage, and you wish to keep your plates, you are required to contact DMV to deactivate your registration.

To deactivate your registration you may use one of the options below:

· Calling DMV Direct at 804-497-7100.
· Surrendering your license plates at a Virginia DMV Customer Service Center.
· Mailing your license plates or a written request to the address listed below:

If you choose to keep the plates and decide to reregister your vehicle, please contact DMV Direct to have your plates reactivated. As long as your plates have not expired, they can be reactivated via the telephone. Please ensure that the vehicle is properly insured prior to the reactivation of the license plates. You will need the insurance policy number and 5 digit NAIC number. There is a $10 fee to reactivate the registration.
