If you cancel your vehicle liability insurance coverage, and you wish to keep your plates, you are required to contact DMV to deactivate your registration.
To deactivate your registration you may use one of the options below:
· Calling DMV Direct at 804-497-7100.
· Surrendering your license plates at a Virginia DMV Customer Service Center.
· Mailing your license plates or a written request to the address listed below:
If you choose to keep the plates and decide to reregister your vehicle, please contact DMV Direct to have your plates reactivated. As long as your plates have not expired, they can be reactivated via the telephone. Please ensure that the vehicle is properly insured prior to the reactivation of the license plates. You will need the insurance policy number and 5 digit NAIC number. There is a $10 fee to reactivate the registration.
