Painted Bits Back!
« on: January 01, 2017, 11:28:45 AM »
Got my parts back from my painter. Seat, headlight bucket, tank and side covers. Black Magic Pearl. Good way to start a New Year! I hope everyone has a great year, may your troubles be few and the wind always be at your back.

Nice liquid black pearl... it looks great!  Be careful with the paint as it show everything and scratches wilo pop out like sore thumbs in bright light.  Black may look mean but it can be tough to keep it looking that way if you are going to ride it a lot.  Tiny scratches seem to be magnified by the glossy black paint.

Look forward to photos of the complete bike

a) which way does the wing point, and,
b) which way does the clip go onto the posts to hold on the emblems... curved side in, or out?

Seems to me that putting the curved side out would hold them on there tighter, but would make them more difficult to remove. C'mon you experts... who knows for sure???  :o

b) They only hold one way- curved side out, yes they're hard to get off!

ahhh... just as I thought. Now, have I got the emblem wing pointing the right way in my photo? I know the top emblem isn't the correct one for 76', but this is my favourite combination of emblems.

OK, three questions... how many put these on with just some 2 sided tape?

The plastic pins on the emblems will surely break if I use the clips and some day need to remove them. Or can you get them off without breaking the pins?

Yes your wing is pointing in the right direction in the pic, look like red K1 jewels. I recently removed ten original round clips on K6 badges and broke one post. I do have some double sided strong foam type tape that fits perfect for these and may use that with the original clips when I go for a reinstall to play it safe. Gently turn the round clip with needle nose pliers when you mount to help it go on and a little lube of choice like dish soap etc. on the pin won't hurt either. Also if using the old clips massage the points back to normal in case they got bent in removing  :)

Good advice. I used red K1 jewels... I like them with the black paint.

Here's the engine, now back in the powder coated frame. Polished all the cases and hubs. I wonder how long they'll stay that way?

I used a jewelers screwdriver and carefully pried up each leg of the clip to give clearance and the clips will come off.  To reuse the clip put them in a vice and flatten them.

I got all clips off without any breakage.

Yeah the wing flies into the wind....as opposed to full flaps on...slowing down the bike..

The '76K with the '72 engine is coming along nicely...

Went with a David Silver Spares repo seat for now, Dunlop tires, NOS gauges, NOS gas cap, new rims and spokes, powder coated frame, billet headlight arms, new wiring harness, new forks, new shocks, new chain and sprockets, Frankenstuff's ribbed side covers and Delkevic SS exhaust. Polished everything, even the hubs. Black Magic Pearl paint.

Need fenders...

This bike started out as this... check out the rear shock holder. And the winker over the headlight.

I've learned a lot here... what a great resource.

Thanks everyone.
