...and speaking of snot...here's a guy selling an ARD Triumph conversion...with no cover, points, mounting plate, condenser, or coil in the FM magneto...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290114810534

Two viewers emailed him about that...here's his reply...

All that I have is what is in the pics. Some miscelaneous nuts and bolts. The guts for the mag is the easiest of the stuff to find. It is like any other mag on the market. Any tractor supply store that rebuilds magneto's will have the parts and some aftermarket mag companies would have them as well.

Someone's willing to pay $306+ for it...   :o ::) ;D

With a day still to go...

Re: ARD Magneto - Mag help needed!!
« Reply #230 on: July 08, 2007, 05:05:47 PM »
Ok guys, so its been forever since I bought this ARD MK2 mag, and after some modifications and parts tracking I finally have it mounted on my 550. I have it temporarily hooked up, and using my electric starter to turn the engine I've been doing some troubleshooting. Does anyone know any of the specs for the ARD CDI mags? Like what kind of voltage I should be seeing at mag, or coming out the "silver box" (going to the coil)? I would assume that I would have either 12 or 6 volts going to the coil (I don't have any now).

At the moment, checking voltage at the blue wires coming off of the black box on the stators, I'm getting 1.7 Volts AC from one, and .35 V AC from the other. This doesn't seem like much, but I guess its a pretty low RPM as well. So I guess I want to know a few things, if anyone knows (Jim? Terry? Anyone?) ???

1. What kind of voltage should the mag be putting out (AC) at cranking speeds?
2. What is the silver box?
3. What kind of voltage should I see coming out of the box going to the coil?
4. Has anyone had any contact with Alan at ARD since they lost the lease on their shop, or has a way of contacting him? (in case I need work done on this thing)

Ps. yellow wire is for a kill switch, I've tried it in both configurations with the same result, no voltage to the coil. ::)

I have a ARD CDI for a Kawasaki and I get about 10/11 volts from the 2 wires going to the silver box when spinning it by hand. I dont have the silver box or coil, but you do need specific ones to work with this set up and not just any coil will work with it.
 Daniel

Well that doesn't sound good! :-\ I assume you mean on the mag side of the box right? I figured that all of that stuff was specialty, although the coil I should be able to figure out, either ballast or non-ballast and 6 or 12 volts (more likely 12), but that doesn't sound like its my biggest problem at the moment, since I'm not seeing anything close to those kind of volts anywhere. Any thoughts on the low voltage?

I think I found one of my problems. I tried to reset the gap between the rotor and the stators down a little closer to the .006" minimum spec'ed on the instructions and found a wobble in the rotor, which is no doubt from spacer I had to make to get the rotor lined up depthwise in the stators (another 750 to 550 issue). Even in the partial revolution there was a voltage difference, so I guess its back to the shop to machine a new spacer. Also need to re-solder the wires onto the "black box", looks like they're getting pretty loose. Sigh  :-[.

Still looking for any info I can get!  ;D

Do you need to run a coil with the MK2 versions?
I didn't think you needed coils with the ARDs
at least with mine you don't but I have the MK1 version

interesting
keep me posted

Terry, Rich
where are you guys?
how are the projects going?
mine is still in limbo, but I did get my
pulleys painted and mounted.
took an air tool to turn in the bolt to the magneto
shaft and when it locked down and started to turn
the mag, ( i have the cap and rotor off) there was
an ark the went from the copper plate the the button rides on
to the screw that holds down the condenser, about .500 of an inch away
very pretty blue arc of high voltage go fast electricity (Georgia talk there)
I might get it cranked in a year or so
lol

I've been lurking here from time to time and I thought it was time to introduce myself. I started reading this thread yesterday and just finished catching up. Very interesting. I have two ARD F/M mags for CB750s and have used them from time to time. I like them, but I also like to ditch the starter, cut down the alternator rotor and install a small gel cell battery.

I was wondering if any of you guys have seen the ARD/Hilborn mechanical fuel injections for CB750s? It runs a belt off the crank just like the F/M adaptor except there's also a fuel pump driven off the belt for the injection. Common on CB750 engined sprint cars. I've got one I was going to put on a 1000cc dragbike project. I still need to find some parts like an RC Block. Here's a link to some pics of Russ' original bike:

http://www.randymott.com/collins.htm

I'm a USMC jet mechanic currently stationed in Iraq. I'll be home in two months and will be able to send/post some pics if you're interested. Keep up the good work.

big-jim -

I'm working on getting my CL450 straightened out (the avatar)- it's on the road and runs OK, but the carbs are gummed up, so I'm putting a new cleaned-up set on...and my Vette transmission is locked in reverse, so that needs to be trouble-shot real quick, so I can get it off the road before the inspection runs out (then they will give me a 10-day extension when it goes back on, otherwise I'll have to have it flat-bedded to the inspection station)...plus I've been under the weather...and real life is not all that good (my Weimaraner is losing weight fast; way too fast)...  :(

Otherwise, the belt boxes & magnetos are coming along...but slowly...I'm in no real hurry...

I gotta start cutting back...too much work planned, not enough getting done...and no time for doing anything...   >:(

G'Day Guys, yeah, I've seen that ARD on EBay a few times, he first put it on after I sold mine to Big Jim. Sorry I took so long to get back to you, I've been working at an Air Force base for the last two weeks and will be for another two more, with virtually no internet access due to the security restrictions there, but I'm home for the weekend, and am doing some work on a special front end set up for a CB750 using:

Honda CB250RR triples (10mm wider and take 37mm fork legs)
Suzuki GS1000 forks
Suzuki GS750 hub
Suzuki GSXR1000 4 pot calipers

Obviously there's been heaps of mods to make it all work, but it's looking good so far. I've had to space the GS1000S discs out 10mm either side of the hub so the big calipers will (just) clear the spokes, space the speedo drive out 10mm as well so I can still use the mechanical speedo, make up mounting brackets from 10mm plate for the calipers, and of course replace all the original mounting hardware with "Unbrako" bolts.

I need to get some braided line to connect the remote reservoir M/C, then at least I can roll the sucker down my driveway and see if it will work, ha ha! I've tried to attach pics for the last hour but this stupid site software here won't allow me to upload them (what's the deal, Glenn? I've reduced them down way below the max size allowed?) so I'll try again later. Cheers, Terry.  ;D

Ooh, ooh, and I FINALLY found a source for belts for my ARD's, ha ha! (I've got two MK2's with points, so I might use one on one of my bikes.............)
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

what did you do with the belts that I sent over?
I think I remember  that they where too short?

They where differant than the ones for the ARDs with points

That is a lot of money for one of those. I paid $350 for one five years ago and I thought that was way too much. I guess its appeal is what drives up the prices. The chopper, cafe and vintage racers all love those things.
