The Dyna 2000 is the best ignition you can buy at a retail level. The ARD is more for a achieving a particular look. It does throw a better spark than a stock CB ignition. I believe those units have a fixed advance which can make cold starting very interesting (especially if you are kicking it). I said before if you wanted the look of the mag you could gut it, install the Dyna 2000 and fit the new mini Dyna coils in the mag head. Best of both worlds I guess.
[/quote]

Thanks, could not imagine that it would do better than a more modern unit, but it sure looks the "bizz". Would certainly want one to fit on my Turbo bike. Hope I can find one some day. Think it's a great idea to put a Dyna or similar in it.

Cheers.
Better sorry for failing then for the lack of trying.

I don't know much about these ARD units, so I was wondering do you run without a battery? Is it actualy a magneto ignition that generates it's own power.

Just curious.

You could. I did, on my Triumph...but if you run lights, you'll want to replace the battery with a capacitor...

Yep. IIRC, the biggest advantage is that it gives consistent spark all through the rev range.

Yes, mine have a fixed advance. I've never had a problem starting, especially kicking. The spark is *hot*!!!

I've got three more ARD's in my garage, I must put another one on EBay...........  ;D

Hey Terry,

What does this magneto bring? Better spark? Is it better than for example DYNA?

Cheers, Rob

G'Day Rob, yeah, like Mike says, the ARD's nowadays are more about form, than function. I suggested installing a Dyna S in one earlier, for the same reason, in fact you could install the Dyna "points plate" in it's normal location, and as Mike suggests, install new Dyna mini coils in the original magneto housing, although you'd still need a battery, of course.

The Ard magneto's that I have are the Mk2 electronic versions, all off Kawasaki drag bikes, and I suspect that the owners flipped the ARD's for Dyna S with little batteries to reduce the weight, and improve the reliability. Interestingly, two of the ARD's look like they've been "retro-fitted" with points, probably again, because the electronic ARD's weren't all that reliable.

They do look sweet though, it's a bit like architecture, modern designs work much better, but nothing compares to the look of a grand old house........... ;D

The owner of this last eBay auction (still going on) was kind enough to email me the two page instruction sheet for the Honda 750 Magneto (the FM mag). It's in PDF form; if anyone can post a 3.33MB PDF doc, let me know and I'll email it. I'm on a dial-up, so if we can post it somewhere, so much the better. Maybe we could even make it a sticky...  :P ::) :D

Yeah, that's right Frank, I think we all knew that. The Dyna S is now around 30 years old too. Cheers, Terry. ;D

I was referring to MReick post where a comparison to Dyna was made. At the time the ARD came out, mags were the only thing that could provide enough spark for a blown fuel bike.

Some folks like the idea of being able to run without a battery..

I think we've had this discussion before mate? Running a magneto on a drag bike back in the day was where the ARD was in it's element, (even though you still needed a battery and an alternator on street bikes if you wanted to ride after dark) but nowadays, particularly with the advent of small gel cell batteries, a Dyna (even a 30 year old Dyna S) is a more logical approach.

As I said, all my ARD's in the garage are off old drag bikes, but I don't think there are too many modern drag bikes running them any more. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Re the 750 ARD mags,

I bought two ARD mags new from Neil Keen back in the mid-70's...  ;D

They were better than anything else on the market back then...and since my Honda is a '73, I think it'll be better than anything else I could find to put on it...   ;)

But for some of us older guys that don't necessarily like to follow the practical
approach then the COOL factor is threw the roof when it comes to an ARD on any street bike
and thats what I really like
but thats my shared opinion too all

Yup I agree,
it looks pretty cool when a slammed snarling 750 pulls up with highpipes, Webers and a mag...  there is just no comparison...

Its like a new Corvette motor is a real hottie but pull up  at the drive-in, with  an open hood 32 with a nice flattie with all the goods on it and people will run from the Vette, like it has leprosy... ;D

Well I like my ARD's too, even though the magnetos were outdated tractor maggys even in the 1970's, they do look great.

But if I had to choose a system for a bike I was gonna ride every day, I'd buy at least a Dyna S, but preferably a Dyna 2000.

If it's gonna be "show" versus "go", I'll take "go", thanks..............  ;D

G'Day Mate, is Lutz your first name, or your last? I only ask because my machine shop teacher in Tech School was called Herman Lutz?

Anyway, Which model ARD do you need? I've got a MK2 with electronic ignition and external coil, and two Mk3 (?) models with points, which don't need an external coil? I hear that the ARD electronic ignition external coils were pretty bad anyway, so I'd rather sell you one of the MK3's with points?

I'm going away for 2 days, but when I get back I'll post a pic of all three, so you can see the difference between the electronic ignition model and the points model. I'll be happy to trade you either one for a Dyna 2000 ignition and a pair of Dyna 3 Ohm coils. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Here you go mate, the two ARD's on the left are the MK3's (?) with points, and the one on the right is the EI MK2. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Sorry mate, if I separated them, the magneto would be useless, and as you know, you can't buy the unique ARD coil or the ARD "black box".

If you want just the coil and black box to keep shipping costs down I'll keep the magneto, but the price is the same, a "straight swap" for a new Dyna 2000 ignition and a pair of Dyna 3 ohm coils. Cheers, Terry. ;D
