cb550 engine temperature
« on: July 22, 2015, 05:10:46 PM »
alright guys just really curious on what type of engine temp these air cooled bikes are suppose to be running....not just at as a whole but exactly where you would take the temp on an engine ...i have an inferred temp gun and am really curious and what types of temps are good and what is not ....like at the exhaust pipe coming out of the head or at the spark plug at the head .... a good temp on the fins where the jug is? .....really curious ... thanks for any input

Thanks dave...it seams i may be running a little warm...might try to back off the timing a little bit and turn idle air screw oit a half turn to the 2.5 turn mark...runs great pulls to red line...but a little warm i think...

seems, or is?  done a temp test at the head/headers?
do your plugs indicate you are running hot?

Plugs look pretty good flybox...ceramic is good and dark...getting about 500 right at the header as close to the engine as i can get ....engine right at the jug ..not the fins..bout 240...fins bout 200...have timing ar about 8 degrees advance static...and run premium gas 93 all the time...really still just tuning around the neighborhood trying to get things dailed in...

ceramic should be coffee brown.
just be sure not to let it idle too long without some sort of airflow.

what is your ambient temp? Is this after a hard highway run, just putting around the neighborhood, what? all that can greatly impact readings etc.

From what you describe by your plugs, I'd not screw with it, especially if all cylinders look the same.

If you are in a very hot climate, put an oil cooler on it. That really is the proper way to deal with a LOT of ambient heat if necessary.

and run premium gas 93 all the time...

No need. Wasting your money with zero benefits. I get the 87 or 89. Whatever is lowest at the pump. All higher octane fuel does is help prevent detonation which usually will never happen in our lower compression ratio engines generally speaking. Myth that it's better fuel.

Well at least we can all agree to disagree...with enough timing these engines will detonate and with the extra octane you can run some extra timing to get a little more power in the power band area...sure you might loose a little up top with out being able to retard it a bit up top via computer...but to say octane does nothin...i dont agree

Ok....if tuned to OEM specs....then additional octane does nothing for you.

You are absolutly right rutt....the oem specs went right out the window with pods and exhaust though... :)....as far as the carbs anyway...you can always spend a litle time on timing and fuel for a little more power)

Haha, I protected myself by saying "usually" and "generally speaking"!
