Car radiator fan
« on: July 22, 2015, 06:26:46 PM »
I just need somebody to check my reasoning. This car electrical radiator fan does not always start when the temperature reaches 210 on the gauge.

Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. I checked relays - there is High and Low and both click under direct power.

Now the only thing I found out of ordinary is that when the fan fails to start spinning all it takes is little push in the blade and it spins just fine, cools down the engine and stops just like it is supposed to.

I think the fan motor is heading south and replacing is the best option.

Opinions?

Bearings are shot most likely.

Replace it, they're reasonably cheap and you can get better ones than OEM from Summit.

Replaced the fan on my Tiger 1050 when its bearings were toasted - better fan than anything Triumph designed.

i use to breake them open..klean the komutator and brushes?..and lube the bronce/ball bearings.and blow dust aut..so the kontaktors mowe free...it seems like a kontakt problem in the spring mekanism since movment can free it to rotate
.often they are not aktived in long periodes of kold and Winter..and some hot day they are frozen bu rust/korosion..and burn the vindings...but 8 of 10 can be saved

i use to remove the radiator.(.on euro cars)...it often easyer then remove the grill /front..

Thanks, Strynboen.  I plan to hotwire it to switched power for now and alread have a replacement coming.

My other old jeep fan is shaft driven with viscosity oil clutch,  much prefered solution imho.

dont hotwire.
..it pulls so mutch power that all fuses blow(. i have been there)
..i used to steal power to the relæ from a other kontakt for manuall kontroll..think it vas a extern power for camping vagon..so i can turn blower onn at red lights..or slow trafic..the only use,, you need...this fans run only 10% of all driving time,,,at Winter less...then ever...

but if you needs to hammer/push it to run..hot vire it vill not help on the problem...its the brushes vho are grown in dust/dirt..and need to be taken aut..to klean up..if there not are a intern Thermosafty device  vho koppels the motor aut..
..most dutra had this visko blower..on ther aircooled engines..it saved a lot of fuel

You may want to verify correct voltage available at the plug at the time the fan is commanded on as well. +1
Does act like a defective fan

So to keep it on the road, I hot wired the relay socket - bridged 87 to 30 - and the fan started to run, but weakly.  That's where I stopped trying, decided to replace the motor.

Thank you, gents  :)
