Cb350F Float Question.
« on: September 01, 2015, 09:10:01 AM »
Hello everyone. I had a couple questions about the cb350f and thought id introduce myself. This is my first post in the forum as I am new to the cb350f and motorcycles in general. Have a little riding experience on dirt bikes but this is my first motorcycle. I just bought a 1972 cb350f with 3248 original miles. I'm in the process of restoring as much as I can to get it on the road again. It has been sitting for a while. I'm guessing 10 years. Its not in terrible shape. Not too much rust on the exterior. Engine turns over and has compression. I have done a lot of reading on the forum but have not been able to find info on the floats. As I was disassembling the carbs I had trouble getting the pins out and ended up breaking the post. Also, the hinge snapped off of the float bracket. I was wondering if these would be ok to weld repair? Would JB weld be ok? I would like to try and repair these first. If not, should I replace all four? Thanks in advance for the help.

Welcome!
you have two options.
Replace that carb body.  contact forum member harisuluv to see if he has one to sell you.
He may also be able to help you locate a new float.
or
look in the services offered section of the forum or search for micro welding
a forum member offers this service.

Hi there,  I think you really need to find yourself a good second hand carb body and float.  I think (correct me somebody if I am wrong) all epoxy resins are affected long term by petroleum.  I don't believe carb metal is weldable in any way, it is almost diacast type material.  If you really want to try and re glue the post, dependant on where it is actually broken (how much meat you have left to re fix)   chemical metal is much better at being petroleum proof, but then not as strong as epoxy.   Again dependant on where the hinge is broken and how good you are, you may with some ingenuity be able to straighten & solder it back  together.

Many things are possible with a lot of skill experience and ingenuity, but personally given the vibration the carb gets I would not consider repair.

Breaking the post or posts?  replace all four what?,  do you mean all four floats ?

Thanks for all of the quick replies! For some reason my computer wasn't accepting the captcha for search function and I have just been skimming through threads. Now I have found a lot more information. Do you know what kind of material the bodies are? A friend of mine is a qualified welder here at work (machine shop) and could possibly do it. I appreciate the help, just feeling out some options as I am anxious to get the bike started!

Only broke one post. Yes all four floats. Wasn't sure if having one brand new float and 3 used would have any negative effects. I was assuming that as long as they're all set to the proper height everything would be ok.

$25 + shipping is worth it knowing its going to be done right the first time.

a used 350F float will work fine.
Set its height per the book, and verify the fuel level using the clear tube method.
use the search bar to learn more....
