Breather Pipes
« on: July 24, 2015, 09:52:20 AM »
Afternoon guys,

I have a cylinder not firing but is getting a little heat through it, and thought I'd check the basics.  Should the breather pipes on the bottom of the bowls be difficult to blow into? It is taking a lot of pressure to blow into. I don't think the bowl if getting enough fuel, I have had the bowl off and adjusted the float as it was a little low hanging but thought I'd check with you guys about the breather pipes first before disassembling the rest of the carbs and cleaning them.

The only other path from the bowls to atmosphere is though quite small passages in the carbs. I don't doubt the overflow tubes are hard to blow through. If there's gas in the bowls you may be able to blow raw gasoline out into the crab throats through the main jets if you really work at it.
Not sure why/how one would adjust a low hanging float as the low stop has no effect on fuel level. Fuel level float height adjustment is done with the carbs off and adjusts the fill valve actuation at the "high" position of the float, you can adjust them when mounted using a clear tube but generally it's done with the carbs off - unless your bowls clip on the tube method is a major PITA and even with a rack of clip-bowl carbs I think taking them off would be easier.
