Replacing Fork Seals CB350F
« on: July 11, 2015, 09:05:06 AM »
So replacing the fork seals seems pretty straight forward but I am having two problems.  Cannot figure out how to remove the bottom case cover and the socket bolt that inserts into the bottom of the fork will not budge even with the impact hammer.  Anyone got any tips?

Bottom case cover?  Not sure what you are referring to.

That allen bolt can be a real pain.  I still have a 350F fork on my shelf with the head ruined and I even broke a drill bit off in it trying to drill it out.  I'm surprised that impact driver won't get it out though.  My misadventures were before I used one...

Did you try heating with a torch and the impact?

That cover #3 the chrome cap needs to be gently tapped all around the outside of the bottom of the sleeve to get it off the lower fork. There are a couple of indents in the sleeve case that grab onto the lower fork and with time and dirt they become pretty solid on there.

A propane torch is a must if you are dong any wrenching on these old bikes and need a heat source. A pretty inexpensive investment that will pay off in the long run.

Try hitting the socket bolt with the few good whacks and some heat. I have never seen one that wouldn't budge at all. If you have to then drill the head off the cap bolt as a last resort and the fork will come apart and you can then spin the remaining bolt shaft out of the oil lock cap on the lower fork.

I'll add: space heater or even a hair dryer will work to put some heat on it if you don't have a torch.

Have you ever used a manual impact driver? You strike it with a hammer.

Get a torch bro. Simple plumbing kit from Home Depot is short dough. You need this.

Any tips on getting the bronze washers out to replace them so the oil doesn't leak?

No need to replace the copper washers, I never have had to and have done lots of fork rebuilds over the years.

Use a dental pick to catch the edge of the cooper washer and they will pop out. If you're concerned about them leaking, heat them just till they glow with a torch and drop them in cold water to quench, and this will re anneal them.

Probably unnecessary.
