Lost in Seatle

Had a melted piston and went with the Cruisin 836 kit.  Got he head on and torqued.  Put on the towers and went to install the cam .  I don't have enough slack to get it mounted.  I can spin the chain with a little resistance so am wondering if it could have come off the crank.  I didn't think that was possible.  I also thought it might have been affected by the tensioner.  In a previous thread, it said if you screw it in, it gives more slack.  Looking at it I can't see that is the case.  If it came off the crank, is it possible to get it on with the head in place?  I love working on this bike but would much more like to ride it.  Thanks for any tips or encouragement.

When installing the cam the tensioner assembly should be removed.....and its a pretty tight fit, its more of a finesse to get it together

Theres an order to the install...if reversed, its too tight and the chain and sprocket wont jump up on the camshaft.   Let me look for my thread where i worked thru this.

Cant find it.   Sorry.
As you slide your cam in, you either go under the chain first, and then thru the sprocket, or vice versa.  One works the other doesnt.

I cant remember the exact process either sorry.....haven't done it in 30 years. But I believe that I slide the cam in with the sprocket loose carefully and then put the chain on the sprocket and attached it to the cam.

Install the chain then the sprocket. It won't work any other way.

Thanks for all the responses.  I just got it in. Chain first then sprocket and it went right in.
