Gap between bearing retainer and hub... normal? CB500
« on: July 25, 2015, 05:01:53 PM »
Hi all,

I was having trouble with setting the chain alignment and noticed the sprocket would move as I brought the chain up to the correct tension.

Anyways I worked backwards and ended up taking the wheel back out and checking everything was installed correctly.

What I found is that the bearing retainer is clamping down on the bearing but there is a 1-2mm gap between the bearing retainer and the sprocket hub.  This allows the hub to 'float' which in turn causes the spocket to tilt slightly when under tension.

Have I explained that clearly?   Some photos below to clarify..

Is this normal or should the bearing retainer sit flush with the hub?

I have new All-Balls bearings in and as far as I can tell they are properly seated.  I can put my finger in and move the internal spacer around but I can't physically drive the hub-side bearing in any more.  The brake side bearing sits flush with the hub.

I can't tighten the retainer down any more as it's seating on the bearing.  Have I done something wrong or is this normal?
