Vin # identification
« on: July 27, 2015, 07:00:44 AM »
Can some one direct me toward a site that will help me ID an old CB750. This may be the holy grail, but not sure.

Here are the numbers,
Vin# CB750-100900

Engine # CB750E-1008842

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have searched and will continue to, but so far no luck.

Thanks

How did you search? I googled "Honda CB 750 VIN numbers" and came up with plenty.
No holy Grail, engine is from a K1. Which means it is not a sand cast and worth considerably less than the motor that came in your chassis. I think you are missing a "0" in your frame number.

Thanks for the info.  Bike has been in a garage for 15 years and I haven't actually had a chance to see it yet.
Suppose to go there tomorrow.

So it looks like a 1970 motor if I am reading the numbers right.
Could that be a late 1969 production run were they installed 70 motors in 69 frames?

I know the numbers seldom match between the frame and the engine, but I suspect with a difference in numbers in the 8k range that the the bike was originally a sand cast with a frame number 900 and that the engine number being so high and not a sand cast number that the engine was replaced in the frame with a 71 model engine, no Holy Grail.

Well it's a half of Grail anyway, and the $1000 he's asking for it seems like a good deal anyway.
The numbers were just given to me by the gentlemen that owns it.
I fit was an actual sandcast I was going to give him considerable more.
I will look it over better tomorrow when I go to get it.
It's the blue one.  Pretty sure they were the fastest ones!  :-)

Great list Powderman but the F's don't have a "F" in the engine number, just in the frame number.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

As someone mentioned you may not have enough digits in the frame number. If it was lets say 9000 then that would be a close match to the 8842 engine. Familiarize with what to look for on a Sandy frame like the horn location etc..
Early K0 has a lot of value also  ;)

I saw the bike. It's not a sandcast and he states the vin is 9000.... not 900...

Not to mention there have been numerous ads for early 70 and 71 750's popping up on CL here the last couple of weeks. Not sure if they are real but none ever have pics.

I wouldn't hold to that list as law, I got it from Carpy's site.
If the VIN is 9000 and not 900, then it's a 70 model frame and engine and not Holy at all.

And do you not take advantage of an uneducated seller? Of course you do. What pisses me off is someone who offers something at a set price and when he gets much interest in the item he raises the price. Happened to me last week on a compressor.

This is the most accurate CB750 Timeline I know of. Sandcasts went to engine 7415.
And yes, the F's can have a "F" in the engine number.
I didn't know that either until I saw one in Larry Hayes' dragbike at Valdosta.

Thanks for all the help and yes I have paid people more then they are asking from time to time and I even lower my price on some jobs I do when I find out I over bid it.
I think it falls under, Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
Some people say it's good karma.
Not sure what it is called but it just feels right sometimes.
But all that aside, an early 70's CB750 complete with original exhaust, seat, tank, side covers, etc, etc, etc. Is still a good deal.

The add was real. I went and looked at it. Not very nice.
Rusty pipes, repainted,(badly), rusty rims, seriously rusted tank.
It did kick over o.k. but that is about the only good thing about it.
Oh ya, he thought it was worth $2000 because of all the calls he had received.  He had canceled the first add and put up a new one for $2000 before I got there.
I said, thanks, but no thanks.
Probably wouldn't have given him $1000 either.
Just glad it was on my way back from Michigan. Would have been pissed to have driven very far to look at it.

Also you mentioned he listed it. I search that area daily and did not see it relisted. Did the bike have the K0 gauges? Black faced.
