New 750A Owner - 77A and 76A Parts Bike
« on: July 29, 2015, 12:06:32 PM »
Hi everyone.  I just purchased a 1977 a CB750A with 22K on the clock. Bike has not run in about 5 years. My plan is to restore the bike with some minor updates and cosmetic changes. I spent the last couple of days getting it running again.  My biggest problem has been rust in the tank.  I removed the tank and was running it on an aux fuel cell for the time being, until the  tank gets cleaned up.  Along with the 77 bike, the owner gave me a 76 parts bike.  I didn't pay much attention to the parts bike because it has no title, tank, seat, or side covers, so i was just going to part it out once i got the 77 running.  Well today I noticed that the 76 has mag wheels on it.  Im pretty sure these arent stock,  the rear is a 16" and front a 19".  From what I've been able to find they may be Lester mags.  How to I tell for sure what these wheels are?  I cant seem to find any markings on them.  Also, would it be worth my while to switch the mag wheels over to the running bike, or just sell them when I part the bike out?  The attached link is the look im going for with the rebuild and I'm not sure how the mag wheels would look.

Thanks in advance for any input you can give.

These are the lester mags.  Some had the spokes fully painted black and some came with highlighted (polished) edges on the arms.  Somewhere on one of the spoke/arms of each mag there should be a number (at least mine do)  stamped in the aluminum.  I dont have the numbers in front of me but i think it was a 5 digit number starting with the number 2.  I just found a thread with the numbers.  http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=80350.0

If anyone needs this is a nice list of most model numbers for different bikes.

More than likely they are lesters.  There are different models as far as some are made for tubeless tires and some are not.  Search this site by typing in lester you should find many threads on them from the model numbers on the wheels to some examples of builders polishing them and even drilling holes through the spokes to lighten them up a bit.

Thanks for the info.  They are in fact lester mags.  Looks like they seem to be pretty rare. Maybe ill just hang onto them and hope that someday they are even harder to get.
