Hi folks, I've been reading some of the posts about the oil light flickering after the engine is hot, installing a pressure gauge, etc. I ended up replacing the pressure switch/sending unit with a $9 replacement from the auto parts store. It fit perfectly and oil light problem was solved. But I also wanted to be able to measure pressure without bypassing the oil dummy light.
So, long story short, I purchased an inexpensive gauge from O'reilly's. I drilled and tapped a 1/8" NPT hole in the right side oil gallery plug, under the points cover. Then I used a brass close nipple and elbow, into which I screwed the compression fitting that came with the gauge. I ran the tubing inside of some nylon tubing for extra protection then up to the gauge (I'll probably replace this outer sleeve with stainless braided fuel line at some point). I had to make a mounting bracket for the gauge with a 2" hole in it. Anyway, the pictures tell the rest of the story and it works great. Pressure is running around 50-60 psi when bike is warmed up (a little higher when bike is cool). It's just another level of insurance to make me feel better that my oil pump is functioning properly. BTW, I'm running Rotel T6 5W40 in it right now, but wondering if I should thicken up to 20W50?
Maybe I'll upgrade the gauge to a better one at some point, but at least the hard work is done, and without too much trouble or expense (about 30 bones).
