Welding up primary sprockets
« on: July 30, 2015, 08:55:17 AM »
Hi all . I opened up an old primary sprocket/shock absorber off a 750 motor for the first time today , with the view to upgrading one ie either welding one up or fitting an upgrade kit which involves fitting stiffer rubbers and then riveting the thing back up .
My question is , has anyone off here any experience of welding one of these up, had it done  or used a bike with this mod done.
Any help would be greatly appreciated guys . Cheers Greg "H".

P.S The bike will be used for Drag Racing only .

If you make it rigid you will  probably start breaking parts.

Forum member Bear  has a 120+ HP 750 engine in his sidecar , he runs heavy duty rubbers in the primary drive...... ;)  There's more shock to the primary in drag racing, if it were me I would go with the heavy duty rubbers, I think the welded primaries were more of an experiment at the time, than the rule..

If You can't fix it with a hammer, You've got an electrical problem.

joe p , that's what I figured might happen . RC listed an uprated set up in their catalogue ,which I've read elsewhere involved some welding ,so I thought I'd have a look into doing something similar .
Retro , I bought the H/D rubbers a while back after doing some research on the matter ,but recently I realised that I had 2 complete trasmission to play with ,so I figured that I could split one and play with it .
I know that the sidecar guys really give their motors some serious abuse , cos I used to run a Suzuki GSXR 1100 powered F1 long wheelbase outfit which would run low 10s in the quarter . So if the H/D rubbers work out for them , I guess they should hold up to what I'm likely to do on my sohc Honda drag bike now ;D ;D

Greg,
Where did you get the HD rubbers? Do you know the hardness?

Hi Kieth . I got the  kit off Voxonda . Regarding their hardness, I don't know .I believe plenty people off here have used them .

Well after much research, which mainly involved reading the excellent discusion on this subject which took place on here in 2010 ::) . I've decided  to go with the rubbers , I'm also going to ommit the rivets and go with countersunk allen screws .
