CB650 oil pan on a 78 CB550

CB650 oil pan in a 1978 CB550. A buddy and I started this discussion the other night.

He seems convinced that it would offer more oil, meaning more of an opportunity for the engine to cool down quicker, or at least keep it at slightly cooler temps

My argument is that, while that sounds great, the 550 pick up isn't long enough to reach the bottom of the 650 oil pan. So how would the excess oil be reached and distributed? It's not gonna cool down the engine from the oil pan??? And you couldn't use the 650 pick up because it doesn't have the nipple set up as the 550 has.

Thoughts? Theories? Facts? Experiences?

I use one on my race engine and run 4 litres of oil. You will need to make sure because of the extra depth of the pan there is still room for the exhaust. It's about 5/8" deeper and the drain plug is underneath in the center.

An extra litre of oil may not make much of a difference for you but it is certainly possible to use this pan.





Here is a 500/550 pickup on the left, the one I modified by cutting off the "legs"(the 650 pan has those cast in) and extending the neck by welding on a section of a 400F part. The steel 650 part on the right. You could always solder in a nipple on the 650 pickup.

bwaller, Thanks man. This is interesting stuff. Why don't you think the extra oil would make much of a difference?

Originally three litres was & is sufficient. A lot of more modern stuff only has 2 litres. That said 4L sure won't hurt you, except it's extra oil to get to temp. Short rides won't do it.

Best of both worlds.. You don't have to run the extra quart, all the time.. But on a stinking hot day when you feel the need...just add it..

So, to my point about the 550 pick up not being any good in conjunction with a 650 oil pan...I'm right then, yes? It wouldn't be able to distribute that extra oil right? Maybe it's not that it wouldn't be any good, it would work, it just wouldn't be accessing the excess oil. In other words you'd HAVE to modify the length of the 550 pick up, like bwaller's done, for the switch in pans to make any difference. Yes? Maybe? Honestly, I'm just trying to get confirmation that my side of the argument is legitimate ;D

Well, even if you left the pickup dangling and not able to reach bottom of the pan, technically it would still cool better.  It would pick up what it could, it would cycle through the engine, when it comes back hot into the sump, the reservoir of oil would be greater, and cooler than cycled oil.  If you add hot oil to a little bit of cool oil, the temperature would be greater than adding hot oil to a larger amount of cooler oil.

Not reach it all the time makes it less efficient, but it all is going to get cycled back and combine and then repeated.

I'd lengthen the pickup or solder a nipple in a 650 part. Don't take the chance of the 550 pickup dropping out of the case. It shouldn't drop all the way out, but why risk it?

harisuluv, what's up dude? I bought a 550 frame hoop from you about a year ago. I'm working on a full rebuild on my 550, recently cut off the back of the frame, really look forward to having that hoop welded on :)

I know, I know...you bought it a year ago and it's not on your bike yet??? I'm a new father, what can I say? Free time is not what it used to be ???
