I wanted to start a non-tech thread for all to vent about the number of times people stop to chat about these old cb's!

A friend of mine calls it the "box of puppies" effect.

Since i've started working at the town gas station with my bike parked by the door, i get 5 people per day that want to discuss the bike.

No.1 question I get is "that your bike" - to which i've begun responding with "Nope, it's a stray, I fed it once and now it keeps coming back."

End rant, ya'll are welcome to share your experiences and snarky comebacks!

Needed fuel a couple of weeks back so stopped in my local gas station and filled up.
While fueling, I noticed 4 guys on sport bikes that were parked off to the side, standing by their modern sport bikes, shooting the bull.
As I rolling out, I wave and two of the guys waving their arms signaling me to come over. So, I did, and they had all kinds of questions: what year is it? You restore it?? How's it run??? I answer all their question and accept their compliments on my '74 that is very close to complete restoration.
Not one word was mentioned about any of their bikes!

OP, if it bothers you buy a cheap cover. Out of sight out of mind. Usually i don't mind talking to people about my bikes, If im not in the mood i just make something up, "sorry ive got to be......" I always love people that think they know what it is and are completely wrong. With my CB450 i often get triumph or norton, a lot of people are very surprised to find out its a 44 year old Honda.

One additional reason to have a nice restored CB. A good way to meet people, making new acquaintances.

Don't get me wrong, i appreciate the compliments too. The added bonus is watching people get overcome by nostalgia.

The "stray bike" joke got some laughs at the station

If you haven't realized it yet, you don't meet chicks on a vintage bike. To do that you need a Panigale 1199 or something...

I also get constant conversations at busy parking lots and gas stations. Honestly it has helped me come out of my shell a bit and shoot the #$%* more with people.

Sometimes you get shouted at...

Hard not to when Rhonda's such a looker.

When my daughter started university I pulled a nice little Honda C201 that I had out of the shed and got it running for her. A nice bike for around town with only 300 original miles on it and nearly 100 mpg. The only problem that she had with it was that every time she stopped somewhere someone would try to buy it off her.

I was just talking about this in another thread, this has happened each time I've been out since its been on the road. Almost all the time, it goes like this: First, the icebreaker is "Cleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen bike!!!" then comes "What year is it?", then the chat, "I/my dad/bro/uncle/etc had one back in the day, fun bikes yea??...." In one of my recent interactions at a gas station, the biggest praise for the bike (and simultaneously an insult to my resto ego

), "Where did you buy it new?"

Those are the 2 most common responses I get as well. The guys that know what it is tell me how they had one, and the younger guys think I just bought it and want one. I love talking to people about it, seeing smiles on their faces. The only time I didn't enjoy talking to someone was this guy who obviously knew 750's very well. He came over to say nice bike, then started looking closely and telling me everything that wasn't correct for the year. And the reply "Good thing it's my #**#ing bike and not yours"

I know a guy had a 37 Indian, and he rode with another 45 Indian..

I'm always amazed at how much attention my bike gets and how many questions people have. Sometimes it's interesting to sit at a coffee shop and watch people's reactions when they see the bike. I don't ever mind the questions.

I had some guy chat with me at the gas station. He kept talking about how I needed to upsize to a Harley and that my bike was just too small to keep riding.
As I finished filling up, I got on the bike and said" You know those old commercials where they said 'You meet the nicest people on a Honda!'?" He said yes. I replied "I'm not f%cking one of those" then kicked it over and rode off.
It felt great, really great.

But normally, I love the attention the bike brings.

I take PCH to work daily and it never fails that at a light, in Huntington, some guy will be crossing the street and look over, stop and say "seventy-three?" For some reason that's the standard year.

The day I got my little 360 I rode it to the store and a bunch of guys had just pulled in on their sportbikes. The first thing they said to me was "wanna trade?"

Just got back from a solo trip from Indy to Ontario. Almost every gas station, diner and motel I stopped at I met some who either knows someone, knew someone or was someone who owned one, raced one or wrecked one back in the day. Love it.

I'll admit I have had my times when I've been annoyed by people wanting to talk about my bike, but overall it's really nice to have something I've worked really hard for be an object of envy for others. Sure I can go out and buy something that others want but don't have, but there's no substance to that. I don't need the praise of others to know that what I've spent my time and money on is worthwhile, but it doesn't hurt.

Working on a 350F yesterday in my driveway, and the guy doing the chimney next door asked me how much it was worth. "$20 grand?" he asked, then asked me if it was for sale. Yep, I answered...

A lot of times I get folks who have a vague idea about what they're talking about, including those who claim to have had one, but are always off. "What year is that Cb550? 1969?" "I had a '72, but it was a supersport." Not worth the time to correct them but it always makes me wonder if they've got a bad memory or if they're bull#$%*ting.

My snappy comeback is when I'm driving my '64 Plymouth drop top. Always get the "what year?" or "is that a '59?" or whatever, and usually from someone driving a Corolla or a minivan. I answer, then ask them, "hey, is that a 2004 Corolla? That thing is sweet! 1.8 liter?"

I get a lot of looks as well when I ride (my bike is no show stopper either, definitely a budget build) and occasionally someone will come up to me and chat me up in a parking lot or even a stoplight. Had a cool experience at a Harley dealership not long ago when I went to pick up something from a friend who works in finance for Riverside Harley. The two dudes had nothing but nice thing to say about the old Hondas they had back in the day.

One time my wife and I stopped at an ice cream stand while we were out cruising on my F2 and parked it out in the lot, as we went outside someone with a late model Jap V-twin pulls up and parks near where we were eating our ice cream. About minute later a family comes walking up and this young kid say's "hey mister, I like your bike" and I reply "sorry kid, that's not mine, my bike is the way cooler bike parked out there" leaving the kid with a confused look. As the family is walking away the young kid says to his dad "but dad, I thought that bike was cooler then the one out there"

Punk kids, what do they know.
