Guy walked up on me at the mobil station and asked "that thing has four carburetors right?"

So I humored his question and it turned out he needed some tech advice for his inline kawi.  Wanted to know how to keep it from leaking gas!

I've heard the same old "had one just like it" with my Seeley.  ;D I finally realized what they recognized from 10 feet away was the motor, not the frame or body work. I think that says something about the impact of the 750.

The engine has always been the most iconic part of the CB750 for me. I frequent some other moto forums, and someone asked once what the appeal was of the "Old Honda CBs"... The engine, by far, was the most popular response. Same with other old bikes, and "modern classics" like the Bonneville, and even Harleys.

That would be a fun poll to have here! My guess for the top factor would either be the engine or the 4-4 exhaust.

I'd stick with just the engine. I there are plenty of other bikes with individual pipes... nothing like that smooth-topped SOHC valve cover though.

I was out riding yesterday when a older guy on a full dress Harley pulled up next to me at a stop light.  He saw my 1972 plate and said "Is that a sandcast that I've heard about ?"  I replied no and he said "I thought they made them until 1975."  I told him no only in early 1969.  He just smiled and said "Nice bike."  Light changed and that was the end of the conversation.   ;D

EDIT
Actually, that's my friend's late father. He knew a lot about older bikes, once owned an Indian I believe.
He commented on the Honda's four cylinders. I'd be doing him a dis-service if not mentioning that he was an interesting gentleman to talk to, and a good human being.  8)

A guy at the bike shop said there is a guy riding around Galesburg on a really early 750 of some sort, it's supposed to be rare and collectible. I replied, you're looking at the bike, it's a sandcast cb750  and I'm that guy.

Yes, I get lots of this when I ride my CB750's...but I was very surprised to find that I get just as much of this when I ride my '86 VF500f Interceptor...kinda makes me feel old as I don't think of it as vintage even though it is much harder to get parts for and will be eligible for collector plates in Michigan next year.
I was a teen when those came out! I still want one bad! somewhere I have a deck of cards from the dealer with all the new bikes on the cards. 84? first year of the interceptor might be 83. Three wheelers were all the rage then.
But yeah  I hear it a lot on mine too." Just like it. but mine was Black!" on and on..

CBX with the 6 pack of pipes sounds like a Ferrari had been turned into a motorcycle.  Addictive exhaust sound you love to hear and would seak out curvy roads to roll it through the gears and rev range for the auditory pleasure as well as the gforce junky fix.

I always get asked how much I spent on my bike. I guess it's hard to tell what year/make/model it might be.
Some lady at work asked if it was a 1930s bike. I said, "it's a post-war bike" in my best Pebble Beach Concours judge accent.

So I rode my bike to the barber shop today to get a haircut.  The guy who cut my hair was one I had discussed my bike with a few times before but he had never seen it.  After paying, I grabbed my jacket and helmet to put them on and he noticed my bike right outside the door.  He asked, "Is this your bike?" and I told him it was.  He said, "Mind if I look at it?" so I said, "Sure...go right ahead."

Well, he walked outside and so did about 6 other guys (all customers except for one more barber) of varying ages who all came outside and checked her out.  One of the younger guys (early 20's) asked what year it was and I went through the whole spiel.  Then my barber goes, "Yeah but he and his son restored it as his son's senior project in high school." and that lead to several more questions.  Ten minutes later, all but one turns to go back inside after saying how much they liked the bike.  So I look at that guy and said, "Everything ok?"  and he says, "Hell yeah...I just wanna hear it cranked up.".

So I cranked it and got ready to ride off.  He steps off the curb and handed me his business card and said, "If you ever decide you wanna sell this bike, give me a call."  I smiled and thanked him and said, "You might wanna go looking for another one if you really want one.  I don't plan to sell this one."

It's all about the cool factor.  I've always thought (since I was twelve) that having a motorcycle was as good as being the lead guitarist in a rock group.  I still think that.

That was actually the first thing the youngest guy said.  "I didn't know they made bikes with 4 pipes like that!"
