Battery ignition without alternator
« on: June 19, 2015, 12:10:40 PM »
Hi,
At the moment i have an ARD magneto on my race bike but i want change to a  dyno 2000 ignition.
I have no alternator on my bike, i want drive with battery. How  many Ah did the battery need that i can drive 1,5 hours or so.

Many thanks in advance

Get a good quality Liitium+ with a 9Ah rating. It will hold steady power for a long time.........how long, I don't know. But I have run a total of an hour or slightly more on a total loss ignition without a recharge. Because of their smaller size and light weight, you may want to install two units for an even longer life. I personally like the Deltron brand (Battery Tender) because they have 4 posts and can be recharged at a 10Ah-rate.

For a while I used a Dyna 2000 system running total loss with an 8 cell LithIon and it would power it 30 minutes at best. The ign. unit had issues so I'm not sure if mine used more power than other D2K's. With a different ignition I gained 15 minutes run time.

Not much help sorry, but by my experience even a 16 cell LiPo would only give an hour.

Thanks for the comments.
A friend of mine uses a dyna S with a 4Ah battery and he can drive 2 hours or so did the dyna 2000 need that much more power??

Good Question...............Mine was a Dyna S on 9Ah Lithium on one bike and a adapted GM system on another that ran on a 1Ah Lithium that we suspect lacked enough power for a good spark at high rpms...............however, iridium plugs only need about 50 - 60% of the power to spark when compared to a conventional plug.  This year I am using a Deltran 9Ah (Battery Tender) battery hoping to have an even longer life with 4-posts for versatility, and improved charging characteristics.

Is it apace or weight problem.?
We could usually. Run points for 1.5 hours or more using just a small 5.5 Ah battery
My understanding. Is the electronic ignition need like 10.5 ish volts to stay running.
Maybe you just need a bigger battery..

Dyna needs high(-er) voltage (10.5 - 11) to keep running. My current Accent keeps running until it drops to 7V.
Better sorry for failing then for the lack of trying.

How do the newer type batteries hold up compared to lead acid  ?

Aurel, maybe introduce yourself, show your bike, etc.... could be nice :)

i run both my 4 cylinder race bikes with oem ignition modules off 90's bikes (GSXR750 in my case) and with the gsxr coils i get about 1-1.5 hours out of a 2.4 AH battery

it's quite easy to calculate, you just need to run you bike and measure the current consumption, then multiply by the time in hours, youll get the Ah you need. in order to avoid voltage drop, woud take a battery thats double that capacity. i.e. if your ign consumes 1 amp and you want to be able to run 1.5 hours, would take at least 3 - 4 Ah. batt

I GOOGLED THIS..........

TheĀ three most basic units in electricity are voltage (V), current (I, uppercase "i") and resistance (r). Voltage is measured in volts, current is measured in amps and resistance is measured in ohms.
A neat analogy to help understand these terms is a system of plumbing pipes. The voltage is equivalent to the water pressure, the current is equivalent to the flow rate, and the resistance is like the pipe size.
There is a basic equation in electrical engineering that states how the three terms relate. It says that the current is equal to the voltage divided by the resistance.

I always preferred wrenches over wires.........

Sorry this is a little off topic, but might be of intrest to some.

A number of speedway chairs down here have been using 18 volt lithium drill batteries.

Apparently it works quite well for their application.

Cheers,
Brian

Bear I make my own from 36V Dewalt batteries, or used to while they were cheap.

A zener diode is always operated in its reverse biased condition. A voltage regulator circuit can be designed using a zener diode to maintain a constant DC output voltage across the load in spite of variations in the input voltage or changes in the load current.
