Broken drive chain...guide?
« on: August 09, 2015, 01:15:09 PM »
Hey everyone,

Went for for 70 mile ride with my family today when I went over a small pothole and heard a loud 'POP!' followed by a fairly loud grinding noise coming from the chain. Pulled over and noticed that the drive chain had slacked off quite a bit. Got it tightened up and rode home, grinding the whole way.

Took the front sprocket cover off and noticed what looks to be the drive chain guard (the half-moon shaped piece bolted to the cover) snapped at one of the bolts and was pushed out into the path of the chain and had large groves in it.  Nothing else appeared to be damaged. I removed it and the grinding noise instantly went away. What is this piece called, is it a necessary piece, and where do I get a replacement?

Thanks in advance

Pics would help. I can't find a parts diagram for the front chain sprocket or cover in any of the fiches.

Not sure if this helps or not. Couldn't take a photo of it on the cover because my hands were covered in chain grease. It bolts on to the inside of the sprocket cover with two bolts and follows the curve of the chain around the sprocket...or at least it did.

That's the case protector. Guess what breaks next time the chain goes and thats not there?

For a brief period of time, when Honda was scrambling to find the answer to the chains breaking and holing the case, those protectors were part of a warranty service upgrade. Not many were installed and they really couldn't protect a case, everytime, from a broken chain anyway (yours didn't actually break, right?). They just get in the way and Honda quit supplying them. But, they looked like a good idea.

That's why you can't find them in any parts book.

Use a good quality chain and be sure your battery acid vent tube extends below the lowest part of the chain, preferably on the right side of the bike, ziiptied to the centerstand bracket.

The chain luckily didn't break, in fact the chain only has about 2,000 miles on it and was fine until that happened. It looks like the protector snapped at the bolt, so not sure whether the chain hit it first or if it just snapped from stress.   Any idea where a new one can be found?

Thanks for the help, guys. Really appreciate it greatly.

It would be a rarity of untold magnitude for you to find a new one at a price you would want to pay.  As I mentioned it doesn't really do what it was intended to do and Honda knew that and that's why they don't sell them.

IF you want it to just have it, well I've done that before.   ;D  Just monitor eBay till one shows up, if ever.   :D

Hahaha well I guess I'll keep an eye out for one.

I'm going to change out the chain just in case. It looks fine, but I'd rather not chance it.

Thanks for your help.

Your question made me re look at the OP post, to see what bike.

I was talking about the CB750. As far as a 550 goes, my comments may or not apply, I don't know. Sorry.

Here is the only place I found that says they have 1 in stock for $12.05. It has a superseded number. The factory part # is 1353-323-0001. The replacement part # is 1353-363-000

Ah, it IS a 550, (a '76 to be exact) sorry if I didn't make that clear. Just a standard chain; no o-ring or x-ring here. Thanks for the link, Powderman.
