rear set shifter linkage parts???
« on: October 30, 2006, 07:23:21 AM »
I'm in the process of mocking up rear sets with some 02' CBR 954RR rear sets and the shift shaft spline linkage doesn't line up with the stock shifter shaft splines.  Where can we purchase these parts, shifter rod and also rod ends?

Thanks

If you search for rear sets on the forum and find ohiocaferacers post, there are some links to dennis kirk for those parts.

I've seen those links from ohiocaferacer.  I'm mainly looking for the splined piece that actually fits on the shifter shaft.  I thought being Honda that the 954RR piece would work but the splines don't line up.  Same diameter it looks like but no go :(

I can make the shift rods in any length you might want and have loads of rod ends as well. The rod ends (or Heim joints) have 6mm thread on the end. I can put Heim joints on one end or both ends of the shift rod.

One end has to be tapped for 6mm reverse thread - I can do that as well.

Some shift rods I've made:

The rod style can be just about anything. Made completely round, round with wrench flats, all hex, hex ends only, knurled, etc. I'm not a big fan of the knurled finish as it gets dirty and is difficult to clean.

I'm not equipped to do the splined part - but old shift levers can be cut off and reshaped so that they have a shift rod tied to one end. Fairly easy to do. Cheap aftermarket shift levers are plentiful if you don't have n extra OEM lever.

What bike is it? Im not sure if all the old bikes had the same spline pattern, but I got a cheap set of stock rear sets for a cb650 a while ago on ebay that had a single splined shift arm with a ball joint on it like you are looking for. Might be worth checking out.

Its for a 76' CB550F..

One thing I was thinking was buying the sorted parts from Raask.  The splined bits did fit nicely when I had my set.  I would have kept them if they didn't screw up the kickstart.

The other less glamorous option is to hack off the end of a stock shift lever.  Drill through the end and put on on of them fancy bolts for a Heim joint (hey, I new a guy named Heim once who had some joints  ;D).

Look for a shifter linkage from a 1972 CB350 twin....it has the shift shaft spline and the clevis for a rearset lever.
