Choke cable connection

When attaching to choke cable to the carbs, how does it attach?  There is a triangle bracket with a screw. Does the cable just get pinched in there?  If so does it go on the cable itself, or on the silver fitting on the end of the cable covering.

Mine will only work if it is clamped over the cable housing. I can't get it to work if I try to clamp it over the metal fitting like you would think it should be clamped.

Thanks... mine seems to be the same way. It just didnt seem right to me and I wanted to be sure I didnt have something wrong.
