Electrical pass through for my van
« on: August 29, 2015, 02:56:19 PM »
I have a creepy cargo van. I'm not much of a camper, but I'd like to occasionally pull up to a campsite, unload the bikes, and spend a night or two in the van. I'm trying to figure out the best way to get power from the camp site into the van.

I'm talking about State Park type camping sites...where they have a power outlet, a spigot for water, maybe a grill and a picnic table. I want to be able to run a drop cord to the van, plug it in, then have power inside the van.
I would only run a fan, maybe a string of LED rope lights and, most importantly, my CPAP machine. It would be nice to breathe and wake up the next morning.  8)

What if I took this van....

Cut a hole in the side and installed a Leviton 4937 (or similar), such as this:

and hooked it to a two outlet, GFI receptacle inside. I've heard that you can then use a 6 outlet, GFI power strip on the outlets.

When I Googled this, these are what I found, but most people are building cabinets, etc., inside the van. How can I make a straight pass through? Through the thin metal wall of a cargo van?
 Any other ideas?

Nice van.   I just got one very similar only its a lot uglier and creepier ha ha, a 1978...I traded my red CB750f for it.  I am stoked to be running a 350 c.i. engine with Quadrajet and HEI distributor once again.
If it works good, it looks good...

Mine's much creepier now. It's been sitting under that crape myrtle for a while. I had to hose it off yesterday.
It has a divider with a heavy moving blanket on it to keep what little heat and A/C it has up front. I installed some leather captains chairs from the second row of a Pontiac van or something. Comfy, arm rests and cup holders.

I have an old area rug in the back and I used some of that silver backed insulation on the roof. That made a HUGE difference in how hot it gets inside. I also limo tinted the rear windows for privacy. And plastered the walls with stickers and a PBR banner.
I have the crappy 305/3-speed. It pulls like a tank and will do 100 mph without even trying, but gets 10-13 mpg.

The coolest thing: I took the old van seats and drilled some holes in those square, wooden casters you can get a Lowe's, etc., and I have rolling seating in the garage. :)
I need to get some new pics of them and the van.
