1979 CB650 Engine Build - Few questions
« on: March 28, 2022, 04:44:27 AM »
Hi, thank you for a great site. I never ran the engine or heard it run before buying so I have no idea of the condition. I have limited experience when it it comes to engine building, just tore down the 1979 650 engine. I had the crank checked and polished, all good there. All the rest seems ok and in spec. I am not trying to start any debates, just need straight answers, thank you.

1. I have tried to buy new main and big end bearings, cant find anything. Where can I get?
2. In the absence of new bearings I have attached a photo of my existing bearings can they be judged on their condition to be re
used. I did a plastiguage check. Mains 0.051 all round, big ends still in factory spec.
3.  Should any anti-sieze be used when re assembling the engine.
4.  Sealing of the cases with RTV, I have read that only motorcycle grade should be used??
In my garage: 2014 HD Street Glide, 2002 HD DWG (Bobbed), 1992 HD Sportster ( Hardtailed), 1982 HD Shovelhead, 2015 BMW F800 GS. To become: Cafe Racers, CB650, CX500, GL500

1. There is no new production of crankshaft bearings for these bikes, period. If you need new ones, you have to either sit on eBay, hunt CMSNL, or grab what you can from David Silver Spares. Might be stock sitting in a dealership somewhere too.
2. If they're in spec, clean the everything and check for any gouges that you can feel with your fingernail. Lube them up really well and call it a day.
3. Only use anti-seize if the factory service manual calls for it. Same with threadlocker.
4. Whatever the book calls for. Hondabond is probably the right stuff.
