stearing damper for cb750
« on: August 17, 2015, 09:25:48 AM »
Anyone use steering damper?
I've ridden lots of years, on many different bikes, but this bike is just not stable in a lean above 70mph 0r so.
I have tried lots of body positions counter steer hard, pushing the bar hard.
The bike just gets a bad head shake going fast while leaning.
I started riding this bike at 4k original miles and it was well maintained its whole life. Stem/head bearings are just fine.
Is it just an upright bike?

As far as I know, these bikes should be stable at those speeds. Since it's an older bike I'd look into other reasons why it's giving you instability. A lot of times swing arm bushings are the culprit. You can look into bronze bearings or needle roller bearings at upgrades. Also, might be good to upgrade steering head bearings as well with the tapered kind like All Balls offers. Search the site for more info from smarter people than me. That being said, I saw a picture of an early factory 750 in a magazine ad and it HAD a steering damper on the right side. If you look on your lower triple you'll see a threaded hole that holds a small tab clamp thing that holds the wiring in place. This is where it was screwed into. I heard they eliminated it because of cost. I can't find a reason why adding a steering damper would be a bad idea. Stability at speed is good. I run one on my 550 as a lot of other members do.

You can use a frame and fork clamp to add one. Nothing detrimental to running one of the proper size.

I'm running an NHK dampener from Fast From The Past: http://www.fastfromthepast.com/steering-dampers/nhk-dampers

There is a threaded hole on the bottom right of the lower tree that it will bolt to. I bolted the other end to a coil bracket already on my frame, but Fast From The Past also sells tube clamps.

I just found this one maybe I give it a try,

http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/351170412604?ul_noapp=true&chn=ps&lpid=82

The bike is fine mechanically, when I bought it, it was just like it rolled off the show room floor in 1978, except it had 4k miles on it. I only rode it 11 years, and
I didn't pound it because I also had a gsxr1000, f4i600, and 2 cr250's to pound.

Steering damper on a CB750 is an improvement.  My bike could get som wobble above 100mph. Low speed as mentioned earlier like bad wheels, tires, swing arm bearings.

Or during touring with passenger, bags, luggage rack with tent, kitchen sleeping bags etc. It could be instable going upwards in heavy slopes, or just accelaration.

I had bad handling when I had longer fork (+6") and no fork brace, no oem fender that kept the fork legs together.
I think I'll change the frame bracket.
