The research I've done shows 800 ppm.  This is the maximum allowable under the current API SM.  However, the previous limit (introduced in 1986) was 1000 ppm.  I have been using Valvoline XLD Premium in my CBX for many, many years.  I recently adjusted the shims, and the camshaft looks pristine...

800's a bit low for my liking, around 1100 is what i'm after, there's quite a few threads on the forum about ZDDP levels in oils and how it effects the old Honda's... ;)

I paud US $9.99 for castrol GTX 20 w-50 "deisel enging" for my friend's car that calls for a lighter weight oil, but with two gallons it leaves me three quarts to change my cl 450 out.  Unfortunately no rebates.

I figure that the heavier oil will be okay or even better for both vehicles summer driving/riding.

Zddp rating is a new concept to me, but castrol brand is something I trust as good stuff.

ZDDP = Zinc and phosphorous , both essential lubricants for flat tappet engines, best at around 1100PPM...

I've been a Supercheap club member for years Trev, and some of their specials are pretty good. Not a fan of Valvoline XLD in bikes but, it made my clutch grabby in my Z900 in 1986 and gooped up the sight glass, so I dumped that crap out and filled it with cheap Mobil oil, and all was good again. I've used Valvoline in cars with OK results though, probably because they've got dry clutches.

I use cheap oil in all my bikes except the Triumph (usually Supercheap's Gulf Western XP) but I add Morey's or Lucas' oil additive, and with my CB750 especially, since I've had it apart several times over the years, I've not detected any component wear. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Is that the Lucas Break-In Oil Additive?  How much do you add per litre?  (I'm a big fan of Lucas products - I use their upper cylinder lubricant & fuel treatment & I swear it makes the bikes easier to start after a long layup)

No, I use their oil stabiliser Trevor. I got hooked on Morey's when I knocked around with some guys who ran a dodgy car yard back in the 80's, they had a 44 gallon drum of the stuff in a shed out back, and they'd put a litre or two in every rattly old jalopy they sold, and with this stuff in it, they didn't smoke or rattle.

I used to like to play with the lucas prop on the counter at Repco, where you'd turn the handle and watch the oil stabiliser moving around the top of the gears, whereas the oil would mostly run back to the bottom. When I pulled my BMW K100RT's cam cover off to check the valves after it sat for a month when I was away on exercise, I was 'rapt to see that the cams still had a nice coating of lube on them, something not seen when I used oil alone. Some troll will probably chime in with the old "Snake Oil" jibes, but it works for me, so I'll keep using it. Cheers, Terry. ;D
