Davies Motorsport SOHC bikes at the Classic TT
« on: August 25, 2015, 09:15:51 AM »
Well...last night the practices for the Classic TT and Manx GP got under way after the cancellation of Saturday night's newcomers practice. Unfortunately there was a red flag during the first session which meant both Alan Oversby & William Dunlop were only able to get one lap in apiece on their 500/4s
Alan completed a 'relaxed' out lap and recorded a 99.7mph lap. William developed an oil leak and retired between Sulby & Ramsey. Both bikes were running well and the guys were busy fixing the oil leak on William's bike when I popped into the garage at the Grandstand at lunch today.
I managed to catch Alan through Ramsey on my phone last night; the sound is better than the pictures...
Note the SOHC forum stickers on the fairings...flying the club flag :-)

Hondafreak,

Am I seeing things or is that a huge front helmet down and in shaped cutout on the top of the fuel tank to allow a lower head down tuck on the bike?(second picture down from the first post).

If so, bravo.  That's some aggressive aero positioning :o.  Helmet down and as flat of a back as possible.  Impressive.  Do you have any more detail shots of the bike.  Any of the rider in the full tuck position?

Great stuff keep it coming.  Love the sohc4 decal. ;)

That exhaust has a nice tight curvy shape..
imagine that has been developed over time as well.
Very nice.  Like the detail shots and look forward to seeing more.

I believe they started the IOM Classic TT 500 class at 2:30pm their time.  That would be 9:30am east coast US.  So they are over an hour into the finals.   Should have results in a few hours.

Unfortunately, it seems that William Dunlap retired on or near the first lap, and Alan Oversby retired on or near the 3rd lap.   No reports of the causes, but no word of crashes so it is currenty assumed to be mechanical in nature.

the hondas did dominate the p2 class but to be honest im not sure what that is .

Bad news on member Colin Stockdale, from Facebook.

Fcuking Manx GP !!! Stockers retired at Parliament Square. Here he is having a Guinness, waiting for Graham and I to pick him up. In good company though, that's John McGuinness in the background. Arthur, Jan Koning, Wattie Brown and Andy all finished well. Wattie was the best at 9th.

That's what I call "gentleman's racing".
DNF at the right spot and order a Guinness.

Bad luck Col, you don't often see the little Honda parked up.

Having a Guinness in the company of John McGuinness -- not such a bad retirement.  ;)  Bummer about the mechanical issues, but what a cool race.

hondas dominated the 350 results
the big race was won by Michael dunlop from bruce anstey , anstey had the fastest lap at 126.261 which believe me is bloody moving on an old bike .

Man,

Those same fast guys on the moderns are the same on these classics.  It's awesome to see that they like racing the old bikes, too.

RAF, a bit sad to say, but some people stop showing up in SOHC4 after they are finished with showing off their stuff in SOHC4.....
He hasnt logged in since august, you might be better off PMing him or contacting the website.
Not a criticism of davies by any means, they might have their reasons, but they certainly had a lot of interest from members. I think there was some commercial interest for them too to stay involved here.
I stopped racing my 500/4 six years ago, but still feel that i owe so much to this forum's community ,  people here are outstanding in their support.

i have always thought this was a mistake , like yossef i am not very impressed when people only use this forum to try to sell their stuff
we have other forum members who also sell but find time to contribute to other threads and are of great value to the forum .
i don't think there is a race for the honda at the TT , its the manx gp or what they now call the classic TT latter in the year where it will race
if i see john i will ask him what is going on and post it , he is a mate of mine from way back but i have no financial interest so will tell it like it is !

Hello...as you guys have pointed out I have made little contribution to here since August last year, on behalf of John & the team. This was mainly due to a disappointing Classic TT and is compounded by the fact that I live in the IoM and hence I don't see JD that regularly. As JD is an utter incompetent on a pc it is left to me to add comments and I have been remiss.

John & Alan, plus some of the team were lucky enough to be invited to race at the Phillip Island Classic in January 2016. A 350 & 500 were shipped out to race, and race they did. The 350 took a clutch of second places, to a 350 2-stroke. The 500 was competing with more modern 400 4-cylinders and only beaten by a Paton in the Classic portion of the race. Alan thoroughly enjoyed his first experience of racing in Oz and the guys are hoping to return in 2017, maybe with bikes adapted to run on ethanol :-)
JD is campaigning a 500/4 in the CRMC 500 ACU class this year, with Alan Oversby. The first round at Pembry resulted in a couple of first places and a coupe more top four places. There has been little 'flash' to report in terms of Winter Tech developments, with more time being spent on engine cooling to maintain performance through the long TT laps. The oil cooler has been relocated, finning has been added to items that were previously plain and the fairing inner modified to force air through the engine finning.
The bikes will be out at Croft next weekend, then the Pre-TT in May followed by the Classic TT in August. Plus all the other CRMC rounds.
JD is busy having a new house & workshop built at the moment, so there is even more room for bikes and fettling.
I guess that major developments have peaked at the moment and there is a lot of work on small detail; hence my lack of contribution.

Peter

Peter, Thanks for the update... I understand how disappointment can suck the desire and motivation out of you...
I hope that the coming races are positive experiences and help you further tune and develop the bikes. It is tough charting unknown waters and the little stuff is hard to quantify sometimes. What with modern sensor technologies (if allowed) many things can be monitored today if you have a mind to do so. Sometimes you can get way too much information, but like a big project...you only eat it one bite at a time.
Best of luck in the coming adventures and I hope the personal projects for all goes well also. Tough to juggle lots of things when work, pleasure and family all vie for your time and small issues can really be tough to overcome in periods of stress and they seem like more than they are.
gschuld mentioned previously in another thread about the redesign of the fairing to duct the air more effectively.  Hope this is working out well and as expected.

Please keep us updated as you are able. Interested in how the bikes handle in the races and if there are write ups (articles) about the bikes you can point us too, or results, then those could be helpful as well.

Cheers,

David M.
